Boys: Darrington 68, Northwest Chr. (Lacey) 65
Highlights: The Darrington Loggers edged the Northwest Christian Navigators, 68-65, in a narrow contest during the opening round of the 2B State Championships.
Darrington (16-4) escaped with a victory despite a rusty first half and game-high 28 points from NWC’s (15-6) Ryan Fox.
Darrington went scoreless for a little more than three minutes beginning at 5:59 in the second quarter, allowing the Navigators to take advantage and briefly seize the lead.
But the Loggers rebounded after the half, and went on a 9-0 run with 5:51 remaining in the third quarter. Cory Hoveskeland keyed the spurt, scoring all but 8 points during the streak. He finished with 15 points for the quarter and 20 for the game.
The Navigators hung with Darrington well into the fourth quarter, and Fox’s fastbreak layin with 1:36 reamining made it a 1-point game.
Darrington will play Northwest Christian (Colbert) tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.; Northwest Christian (Lacey) will face Napavine at 10:30 a.m. on the loser’s side.
