Boys: Northwest Chr. 46, Wahkiakum 38

Highlights: The Northwest Christian boys basketball team is a tested and proven squad. And they showed why on Saturday. The defending state champion Crusaders are once again champions after defeating Wahkiakum 46-38 in the 2B State title game at the Spokane Arena.

Northwest Christian made 10 free throws in the final two minutes to close out the game.

Sophomore Matt Zandbergen tallied a game-high 13 points and senior Joe Grewe added 11 points to lead the Crusaders, who made 15 of their 25 free-throw attempts while the Mules were just 9 of 15.

Sophomore Chase Ramey added 10 points and sophomore Jared Descoteaux pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for Northwest Christian (29-1).

Wahkiakum (25-2) got within four after Travis Bain made two free throws with 54.8 seconds remaining, but that was as close as they would come.

Senior Toby David paced the Mules with a team-high 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting and senior Ty Briscoe chipped in with 10 points.

The Crusaders beat Republic 54-48 in last year’s state title game.
