Girls: Evergreen Lutheran 40, Waterville 34

Highlights: The Evergreen Lutheran girls basketball team was denied a shot at this years 2B State title after a disappointing loss to La Salle on Friday, so the Eagles’ seniors assured their team of the next best thing.

Senior forward Erika Laete had a team-high 10 points and 15 rebounds and fellow senior Rachel Hanson added nine points on 4-of-9 shooting as Evergreen Lutheran took third place at this year’s State 2B girls tournament with a 40-34 win over Waterville in the third/sixth place game Saturday at the Spokane Arena.

The Eagles set the tempo early, scoring the first five points of the game and racing out to a 15-6 lead with 6:29 left in the second quarter.

But the Shockers fought back and cut the deficit to two before the half.

In the second half, Waterville continued their comeback. The Shockers outscored Evergreen Lutheran 14-9 in the third quarter and led 29-26 heading into the fourth.

This is when the Eagle’s senior stepped up. Led by Laete and Hanson, Evergreen Lutheran topped Waterville 14-5 in the final quarter to close the game out.

Laete scored five points in the final 50 seconds. Her two free throws with five seconds left in the game gave the Eagles a six-point lead.

Waterville, coming off a tough loss to Mossyrock on Friday, couldn’t buy a basket in the fourth quarter.

Senior Lauren Daling tallied a game-high 13 points and senior Jacque Brown added 11 points to lead the Shockers, who shot just 24.5 percent (13-53) from the floor.

Neither team shot particularly well from the field, but the Eagles were able to outrebound Waterville 53-34, including 21 offensive boards.

Evergreen Lutheran was able to get production from their reserves. The Eagle’s bench scored nine points while nobody scored off the bench for the Shockers.

Evergreen Lutheran finishes the season with a 25-3 record. Waterville ends with a 22-5 mark.
