When the time came, senior Matt Zandbergen came up huge scoring 18 points, eight in overtime, and pulling down 16 rebounds as Northwest Christian used every inch of magic they had left to escape 59-46 over Garfield-Palouse.
As the final 10 seconds in regulation ticked away, Garfield-Palouse turned to their senior leader Tyson Palmer who drove the lane, missed the first try but put back the second attempt as time expired to send the wild semifinal game into overtime.
It was all Northwest Christian (28-0) in overtime though as it scored all 13 points in the extra session. Senior Chase Ramey, who didn’t shoot well all night, scored five of his 14 in OT.
The Crusaders, who had a big size advantage down low, worked that to their advantage and got to the line early and often. As a team the Crusaders took 40 free throws to the Vikings 15, making 30.
Northwest Christian controlled the game early limiting the Vikings to only three first-quarter points, but Garfield-Palouse (22-5) quickly got back in the game as it outscored the Crusaders by seven in the second.
The Crusaders came into the game averaging a 24-point victory margin the first two nights, but it was a different story against the Vikings. Tyson scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half.
Northwest Christian will play Davenport for the fifth time this season tomorrow night at 8 p.m. for the state title. Garfield-Palouse will take on White Swan in the afternoon session at 3:30 in the third-place game.

Do you know how many total fouls were called in this game or did everyone lose count?
Does it matter how many fouls? Seems the zebras were for NWC...go figure probably paid. As it has become about money for them.
booob goo D-Port support the real schools screw the private schools!
NWC is a bunch of cheaters all they do is pay money to refs.. make the private schools in their own league.. B1 both teams were private in the championship and now NWC is again in the championship.. wierd.. you'd think they recruited.. makes a lot of people wonder!!!!!
The name calling, accusations, and petty attitudes among the comments in this blog are ridiculous and shocking. You may disagree with the way the WIAA has the tournament set up. Fine. But don't disparage a team, students, and a school simply because they have been successful with a bunch of baseless and inflammatory accusations.
Please read this post from an NWC parent, Larry Vandenburg, on a previous blog who provides some accurate information.
"I have had four of my kids play basketball at Northwest Christian and have heard, over the years, about the school recruting allstar players. This is simply not the reason that we have had a successful boys basketball program. We, in fact have, lost many outstanding players over the years because they wanted to play at the public schools. Our state champion team of 1994 had very few seniors on the team but the two best players transferred to Shadle and Mead to try and play in a bigger stage. Our girls team that went to state last year lost two of its all league players to L/C and Mt. Spokane. Our current boys team has four starters that have been at the school since the first grade so we are not bringing in ringers. The real reason for our success is we have a strong AAU program in Spokane (which NWC and many other schools take advantage of), we have a wonderful coach in Ray Ricks, and we have a great school in which good kids are drawn to."
Sure David...Sure David. Those players that transferred live in the Shadle and Mead districts so they should be playing there anyway.
Its not about recruiting and all this crap but when one team shoots 40 foul shots to 15 on the other team makes the refs look bad. Way bad.
Its about the money plain and simple. Sucks even high school basketball has become about the money.
Well since David posted a reply in the other thread, I would also like to post my reply.
"Larry, you underscore the point that makes such a rift in the B's. You say you have a good school and program that kids are drawn to. That is where the problem lies. The public B schools are bound by districts and demographics. Kids can't be drawn to the schools. They are bound by where they live. That makes a significant difference.
The simple fact that NW Christian is a private schools puts almost every student at that school in a different demographic then your public B schools which gives them an advantage. Sixty Five percent of the kids in our town live in families whose incomes are at or below the poverty line. You better believe that makes a difference in opportunities to grow as a player.
You mention AAU as being a major part of the success. Your kids play AAU, our kids are helping with harvest.
I'm not against your school. All I am trying to say is that NW Christian is in a totally different demographic then your typical B schools which means there isn't a level playing field."
I half to agree with mike. I think that the private schools should have their own league, their own state tournament.
Hey, if the wiaa can split the B's into two different classes, then the private schools, should have their own league or at least their own state tournaments.
Well, I have found all these comments very interesting. I have a few observations myself. While many families have the monies to pay for private school there are many at NWC who financially receive scholarships and make great sacrafice to choose to put their students at NWC or any other private school for that matter. As far as one player being raised on AAU and one on the harvest. I have been continually impressed over the years with the quality of players both male and female who come out of the farming schools, or who have not participated in AAU. Have you watched them? They are amazing...so who has the advantage, really? There is such great value in both. And who? I want to know is paying the referees? You have got to be kidding me. This is high school basketball in Spokane. The referees I have talked to take pride in their job and honestly are offended by these accusations. I would love to hear them speak to this. They have one of the toughest, underappreciated jobs on the court. They call the game the best they see it, not always how we as fans see it or think is fair. A referee should never determine a game and honestly rarely do. Getting back to the State Tournament, the powers to be had to decide to change the leagues and tournaments. I do not like it either, I like a BIGGER State B tournament, but honestly what would it be like to further seperate it out by putting private schools in their own tournament. We would be even further from what this tournament originally began as. Besides, atletics are really a training ground for life, and life certainly does not work that way. Let's give all kids the best chance at life, let them be, let them play. As for all this mud slinging about recruiting and paying and unfairness, can't you find a healthy way to deal with life. An excellent program has had great success, it won't always be that way, we have seen it come in waves. Give those boys their due, they are talented and they play for the approval of God, not man! No wonder you are not approving. Go out, enjoy the games...watching two teams of excellent, hardworking athletes play their hearts out...only one can win. But lessons learned and handled well, all come away winners! I would love to see us American's/Adults behave ourselves like winners and lead by example. And by all means if you are bold enough to write in and state your opionion
take credit for who you are, put your REAL name!
The GarPal vs NWC game was a real nail biter...excitement at it's very best! Our boys played a great game and gave NWC a real run!
I am proud of our boys, girls, coaches, fans and our athletic and scholastic programs - looking foward to next year...2010 should be exciting - Go Vikings!
How DARE you say such horrible, rude and unjustified comments about these absolutely amazingly talented young men?? How DARE you attempt to minimize their OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENT of winning a fourth straight State Championship? You think that was easy? Do you honestly believe they just put up a few shots and won the grand prize? Do you not understand the amount of hours of dedication, sacrifice and determination they each of put into this accomplishment? Not to mention the pressure. They have had a target on their backs the ENTIRE SEASON! But, being the tremendous athletes and young men that they are, they rose above it all! Get off their backs with your petty attitudes!
Their are 6 seniors on the NWC team. Three of them have been together`since`Kindergarten...another 2 have been there since the 7th grade! Ringers? Recruiting? Really? You are absolutely unjustified in your nasty and unbelievably rude comments. These fine young men are not only the State 2B Champions, they are also the State ACADEMIC Champions!!!That means not only are they working incredibly hard on the court, but also in the class room!! Give credit where credit is absolutely and unequivocally due and stop this poor sportmanship!! Your attitudes are a disgrace to this tournament. I'm more than sure the referees would agree that you are only making yourselves look foolish by saying that NWC paid them. How ridiculous! Did any of the other teams that won their games pay the refs too? Or is it just that you are blinded by your pettiness and jealousy that you choose to single out NWC?
CONGRATULATIONS to the NWC boys team! They EARNED the Championship! They WON because of their hard work and perserverance! NOTHING and NOBODY can take it away from them...EVER! They have made state history!
So, all you nay-sayers can keep your awful comments to yourselves. They are not justified or warranted and certainly not necessary or appropriate. They make you look petty, selfish, jealous and reflect a poor sportsmanship attitude. Shame on you!
Crusaders...WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!!!
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF EVERYONE COULD WATCH THE LAST 10 SECONDS OF THE NWC VS GAR-PAL, ESPECIALLY THE 3 REFS AND THE FOUL AT THE END OF REGULATION. AND THEN THAT REF WALKING AWAY AFTER THE SHOT. WONDER WHAT THAT REF THOUGHT!! FIND A TAPE AND WATCH.....
I was there and there were missed calls, poor calls and great calls on both sides of the court. I recently watched a girls game that I got more than mouthy with the refs because I felt as if they had determined the game in the final two minutes with mutliple calls on one end of the court and none on the other and a technical. But after I stepped a way from the game and the emotion, I had to honestly and realistically say that it was not the last two mintues or the calls that determined the game, it was a multitude of things that occured over 32 minutes of ball playing...it was a 10 point lead that was given up, it was turnovers, it was missed free throws, missed opportunities at coaching a young team, it was missed calls, it was great defense, it was determination, it was made free throws, it was agressive playing, it was keeping your head in the game! There is a lot that went in to the win and lose that night I sat at that girls game just like there was a lot that went into the win and loss of the NWC-GAR-PAL game. I may or may not feel the same as you about the last 10 seconds of the game, but I do know both teams played a great ball game all 32 minutes that brought about the final score. I am proud to be a part of State B, proud of all these hardworking, amazing atheletes, proud of the coaches and thankful for the referees, but I am not always proud of being a parent or a spectator because we seem to be the ones who misbehave the most and leave a bad taste in some peoples mouths. There is a lot we can learn from our kids. Way to Go Athletes!
If you watch the last 10 seconds of the game you might find that he could have been called for a travel. I think the refs did the right thing but letting the two teams settle it in overtime rather than call a travel or a foul on a buzzer beater. I think NWC proved they were the better team in the overtime period too.
I understand that a lot of people wanted to see NWC go down this year, but I think they are the best team in the state and that means they deserve to win. I can't believe that so many people are so jealous of the success NWC has had that they would make claims they pay refs and recruit players. That is simply not true in any way. Can't we give the NWC players and coach credit for an amazing 4 years? Lets not take away from all the hard work they have put in to accomplish what they have. Plus, it is pointless to try. They know what they have done is special and nothing anyone says about them cheating changes the way the see it. If anything it just proves how great they have been because people can't believe it so they make up outrageous claims against them.
The truth is NWC had a great run and they worked hard and earned it.
