Fish and Game report

It seems that after being out of circulation for so long, anglers have forgotten how good the trout fishing can be at Sprague Lake. At Sprague Lake Resort, Monika Metz reports lots of trout for very few anglers. She says limits come quickly right from shore, most of the fish over 16 inches.

NW Motorsports: Cancelation benefits ICAR series

Nathan Fleury woke up last Sunday morning fresh off a season-opening victory in the ICAR Late Model Series 50-lap main event never expecting to be preparing his race car for a quick turnaround to run Saturday night. Neither did Joe Doellefeld, owner and operator of Stateline Speedway.

Homegrown hero

Sometimes you never know just what it is you're growing. This is almost 10 years ago now. Mark Rypien, the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player who deep down probably harbored dreams of centering a Stanley Cup line, had opened up an ice rink in the Spokane Valley in a venture that, alas, would not end well. The Spokane Chiefs made it their practice headquarters to cement a happy relationship with him, squeezing their workouts in between the private lessons and midget tournaments.

Parker, Ginobili spur San Antonio

There was no third-quarter breakdown for the Spurs on Thursday night in San Antonio, just the desperate play of a team whose quest for a second straight NBA title was on the line.

Mead, University advance to district semis

It was an eventful Thursday at Whitworth's Marks Field for second baseman Tiffany Lookabill, whose Mead Panthers advanced to the District 8 4A softball semifinals with a 7-2 win over Gonzaga Prep.

Reign in the rain

Wind and rain made life less than pleasant for everyone at the District 8 track meet at Spokane Falls Community College Thursday night.

Red Sox learn to steal

The Boston Red Sox continue to be aggressive stealing bases. It is not the kind of attack normally associated with the station-to-station Sox, but it isn't happening by accident, either. The Red Sox are 29 for 33 on steals, leading the majors with an 87.9 success rate – the same as Philadelphia's major league record last season (138 for 157).

Bengals claim title

Beau Balmer had three hits and Matt Blankenship hit a home run as host Lewiston beat Lake City 5-4 to win the 5A Region 1 baseball championship. Chris Combo and Trent Bridges each had two hits for the Bengals. The Tigers (20-1) move on to state while Lake City (16-6) will play Post Falls (10-14) today at 4 p.m. for a second state berth.

Tennis tourney looms

PULLMAN – Wait, weren't we done with the NCAA tournament a month ago?Not for college tennis, and there are two area teams making an appearance this weekend in the big event.

Sexson ejected, Mariners dejected

SEATTLE – Ian Kinsler hit a two-run homer and then got hit by a pitch, setting up a fourth-inning brawl in the Texas Rangers' 5-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.

Red Wings glide past Stars in opener

Johan Franzen, Brian Rafalski and Tomas Holmstrom scored power-play goals for the Red Wings, who built a big lead in the second period and coasted to a 4-1 win over the Dallas in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals Thursday night in Detroit.

Coeur d'Alene returns to state

Two-time defending state champ Coeur d'Alene may have been the No. 2 seed in this year's 5A Region I softball tournament, but when Thursday's action was done, the Vikings were No. 1.

Stateline Speedway calls upon ICAR for repeat performance

Nathan Fleury woke up last Sunday morning, fresh off a season-opening victory in the ICAR Late Model Series 50-lap main event, never expecting to be preparing his race car for a quick turnaround to run Saturday night.

Puckett, Hopkins sizzle

They should have refunded admission to the couple of handfuls of daring fans who paid to attend the District I Meet of Champions and sent the track and field participants home.

Seahawks need answers

KIRKLAND, Wash. – As regular as the turn of a calendar page, the end of the first spring minicamp brings the usual questions for the Seattle Seahawks.

Heytvelt recuperates

Gonzaga forward Josh Heytvelt, who missed the first 11 games of the 2007-08 season following surgery on a stress fracture in his right foot/ankle, had another operation on the same foot/ankle last week.

Spotlight on youth lacrosse

Spokane Youth Lacrosse is inviting people to experience the sport with an all-day lacrosse jamboree at Gonzaga Prep on Saturday.

Garcia builds two-shot advantage at TPC

Sergio Garcia – mired in a 0-for-53 drought on the PGA Tour, the longest of his career – had seven birdies Thursday at The Players Championship, leading to a 6-under-par 66 and a two-shot lead at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Trout, kokanee

It seems that after being out of circulation for so long, anglers have forgotten how good the trout fishing can be at Sprague Lake. At Sprague Lake Resort, Monika Metz reported lots of trout for few anglers. She said limits come quickly right from shore, most of the fish more than 16 inches.

Thursday's results

Pirates 5, Giants 4: At Pittsburgh, Adam LaRoche hit a go-ahead single in a three-run seventh inning as the Pirates finished a three-game sweep of San Francisco. Pittsburgh has won 13 of its last 15 games against the Giants and swept three-game series in three straight seasons against San Francisco.

Thursday's results

Yankees 6, Indians 3: At New York, Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit homered in a victory over Cleveland that prevented a three-game sweep. The Yankees matched a season high for homers. Cleveland was trying to sweep the Yankees in a series of three or more games for the first time in nearly two decades.
