Area recreation calendar Nathan Fleury woke up last Sunday morning fresh off a season-opening victory in the ICAR Late Model Series 50-lap main event never expecting to be preparing his race car for a quick turnaround to run Saturday night.

Mark Rypien, the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player who deep down probably harbored dreams of centering a Stanley Cup line, had opened up an ice rink in the Spokane Valley in a venture that, alas, would not end well. Mead sophomore Alexis Olgard has been selected as a member of the 2008 USA Volleyball Women's Junior National Training team.
