Want a little culture but don't know where to get it, or a little art, a history, and fun?
The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in the heart of Spokane's Browne's
Addition neighborhood may be what you're looking for.
A big draw to the MAC is the Historic Campbell House tour, where every piece of the home has a story. This awe-inspiring English Tudor Revival home was built in 1898 and designed by famed architect Kirtland Cutter.
You can see how the family lived, where they stored their horses, how they got their ice, where the servants lived, how they cooked, and more.
Currently, there are three Campbell tours. (Nuts & Bolts, an hour-long look at the house; Changing Times, an hour-long tour about the social aspects of that time; and Quick Glimpse, a 30-minute tour combining home features and the period's social climate). Visitors can sign up for tours at the Admissions desk - they run 1- 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 3:30 p.m. weekends.
New exhibitions come to the MAC frequently, and this summer will see Living Legacy: The American Indian Collection, a culturally-sensitive presentation that shows how Native Americans began to see their objects put in glass displays, as well as Big Timber,
a new addition to the "Spokane Timeline" room that describes the Inland Northwest timber industry from many viewpoints. Current exhibits also include John Buck: Iconography, Contested Ground: The Landscape Redrawn, Olmsted Brothers: Designing Spokane Landscapes, and Spokane Timeline: Personal Voices.
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors (62 & over) and students with a valid ID, and
free for ages 5 and under. The Campbell House tour is part of general admission. The MAC is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and to 8 p.m. on the first
Friday of every month.
