The first thing people think of when they think of Spokane isn't always trees. But not everyone knows that lilacs are only the beginning of the area's interest in beautiful flora.
You can get an idea of the diverse plants and trees by paying a visit to the John A. Finch Arboretum, which offers more than 2,000-labeled trees and shrubs from the Inland Northwest and from around the world.
A walking tour of the Aboretum, located on the west side of town off of the Sunset Highway, covers approximately 65 acres and includes Japanese Umbrella Pines, blue spruce, and cotoneaster and maple collections.
There is a tree for every personality and a season for every bloom in this arboretum visited by naturalists, horticulturists, students, gardeners, photographers, and simple leaf lovers alike.
If you aren't sure what to plant in your home garden or if you desire more scientific knowledge about trees and shrubs in general, the Arboretum also offers seasonal instructional programs and activities throughout the year. It's open all year from dawn until dark, and it's free to the public.
