MANRING, Betty Hinrichs
(Age 97)

of Silverdale, died January 11th at Northwoods Lodge. She was born August 12, 1909 in Pullman, WA to Max and Marie (Fulfs) Hinrichs. Betty graduated from Pullman High School in 1928 and from Washington State College in 1932. She married Santford Allen Manring, he preceded her in death in 1999. Betty worked at WSU in the History and Political Science and College of Veterinary Medicine departments for many years retiring in 1974. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Kappa Delta Sorority, served as Province President and President of the Alumni Advisory Board, member of AAUW and was a WSU Benefactor. In the early 60's Betty was the Junior Pan-Hellenic Advisor at WSU. Except for the four years she attended Washington State College and two years that she worked for Associated Press at the 1932 Olympics and at Paramount Studio, Betty lived on the farm just outside of Pullman, WA that her father homesteaded in the early 20th century until she was 86 years old. She is survived by her sons Mike and Tim; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Pullman at a later date.

NORTHROP, Seymour E.
1907 - 2007

Seymour was born May 7, 1907 in Spokane. He was the son of pioneer Doctor Edward R. and Laura Northrop. Seymour attended Phillips Andover Academy and MIT in Cambridge, MA, graduating in Architectural Engineering. In World War II he served in Burma and India, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Mr. Northrop married Betty Merwarth in 1946. They operated Quality Decorating House in Spokane for many years. After Betty's death, Mr. Northrop married Margaret Bain Goodwin. They were together for 22 years. Mr. Northrop belonged to The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Spokane Club, Spokane Garden Club, and MIT Alumni Club of Seattle. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Cathedral, Hospice of Spokane or Manito Gardens. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 1:00 pm at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., Spokane.

HOUSER, Frank E.

Frank E. Houser of Spokane died January 13, 2007, after battling Alzheimer's disease for several years. He was 86. Born in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, on May 28, 1920, he received a BA from Houghton College in 1943, and then served as a naval officer in the Pacific during World War II. He went on to Columbia University where he earned an M.A. in Sociology in 1948 and a Ph.D. in 1974. He taught sociology at Wheaton College in Illinois from 1948 to 1959, and also taught summer courses at the Young Life Institute in Colorado from 1958 through 1962. In 1959, he moved to Spokane to join the faculty of Whitworth College where he later headed the Sociology Department. He was known for his kindness and sensitivity to students and colleagues alike. Dr. Houser wrote several articles about social movements and activism, and Christianity, social problems and the family. He was active in Whitworth Presbyterian Church and had a lifelong love of music and sports; he played the cello and sang tenor in the Whitworth College Faculty Quartet, and he was an accomplished and dedicated basketball and tennis player. Along with his wife Helen, he taught a popular Whitworth class on marriage/relationships, and after his retirement, they twice journeyed to China, where they taught courses on English and American culture at Nanjing University. Dr. Houser is survived by Helen, his wife of 60 years; his sons David, of Bellevue, Washington; Douglas, of Lavallette, New Jersey; James, of Seattle, Washington; his daughter, Jacqueline Faoro, of Nevada; a brother, Ron, of Lathrup Village, Michigan; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at Whitworth Community Pres-byterian Church on February 3 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Whitworth Presbyterian Church to be used to strengthen its connection with Presbyterian churches in China or to the Whitworth College Athletic Department to be used toward a better sound system for the Field House.

AUCH, Thelma Colleen (Danser)

better know as "Hubba," passed away peacefully in her home January 11, 2007 after a long and brave battle with ovarian cancer. Hubba graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1963 and began raising a family soon after. Before retiring last October, Hubba worked as a Professional Lighting Consultant at Lamps Plus in Lynnwwod, WA. She touched many lives in her 61 years with her kindhearted, caring nature ~ she will be missed and remembered fondly by all who had the good fortune of knowing her. Hubba is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Dallas and Karrie Auch and their children Logan, Natalie and Gavin of Olathe, KS; her son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Christina Auch and their children Nicholas, Mackenzie, William and Chett of Independence, MO; her daughter and son-in-law Vanessa (Auch) and Kenny Zink and their children Emily and Braden of Spokane, WA; and her sister Ethel (Peachie) Cusenza of Davison, MI. Hubba will be laid to rest at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint, MI next to her parents Viola (Holt) and Dallas Danser of Davison, MI. Funeral services will be held at Sunset Hills Chapel in Flint, MI.

BORDEN, Albert August "Ab"
(Age 79)

of Arlington, WA, passed away January 11, 2007 in Kirkland, WA. Ab was born on September 17, 1927, in New York, NY. He grew up in Spokane, WA, where he attended Rogers High School. Ab spent his career in sales, retiring from Kim Hotstart Manufacturing in 1998. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Wandermere Men's Club. Ab was an outgoing, strong, faithful, caring and a loving husband, father and grandfather. Surviving Ab is his loving wife of almost 27 years, Margaret Borden of Arlington; his sons, Ed Knapton of Kirkland, WA, Randy Borden of Redmond, WA, Terry Borden of Spokane; his daughters, Kris Fouts of Edmonds, WA, Kim Cummins of Biglake, AK; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A Memorial Service will be held at a future date.

EDGAR, Glen P.
(Age 90)

of Rathdrum, ID passed away at Generations Assisted Living in Rathdrum on January 11, 2007 with family by his side. Glen was born in Polk, NE on March 14, 1916, the son of Cleveland and Suzanna (Piper) Edgar. He married Lettie Mae Dickinson in Kellogg, ID on August 21, 1937. After many moves around the Northwest to follow work, they moved to Priest River in 1942 and purchased their first home there in 1943. In 1946, they purchased a small farm in the Settlement area. After working at Albeni Falls Dam for a few years, he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream and they purchased a holstein dairy farm on the Peninsula in 1956. Health problems forced a less physical change, so he sold real estate for the McGinnis Agency and he and Lettie started G-L Realty after moving back to town. He loved to golf, and was an active member of the senior division at the Ranch Club Golf Course. After selling the real estate business, he and Lettie spent many years traveling around the country, visiting birthplaces, locating and visiting other distant family, and spending time with children and grandchildren. Health issues in 2005 forced a move to Rathdrum. In his younger days he enjoyed drawing and craving. Survivors include four children: Nancy Hirst and Glenda Moore of Rathdrum, ID, Patricia Fox of Stanwood, WA and Robert Edgar of Monmouth, OR, 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Survivors also include his sister Lee Johnson of Post Falls, ID. Besides his parents, Glen was preceded in death by his wife in 1996; one son Larry in 1967; two brothers, Rex and Mike; three sisters, Esther, Ima, and Betty. Other special people, The Dopps family and the staff at Generations Assisted Living. A Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at the SHERMAN-KNAPP FUNERAL HOME IN PRIEST RIVER, IDAHO. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River. MITHOUG, Fred
(Age 81)

Passed away January 11, 2007 in Rockford, WA. Born in Rockford, WA and graduated from Rockford High School. He farmed all his life in the Rockford area and was a member of Rockford Grain Growers and Washington Wheat Growers Association. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Betty Mithoug; daughters, Sandra and Don Weingart, Post Falls, ID, Lori Aluna, Spokane; son, Fred A. and Vicki Mithoug, Rockford; granddaughter, Donika Kopp and Lonnie and great-granddaughter, Lena Kopp, Rockford; grandson Jason Shriner, Post Falls, ID. Also surviving are sons and daughter-in-laws, Jim and Charlotte Trejbal and David and Karen Trejbal, both of Rockford; daughter, Bonnie and Lee Peterson, Olympia, WA; grandchildren Cheryl and Jason Beck and their daughter, Mercedes, Fairfield and Mike and Jessica Trejbal and their son, Noah, Spokane, Andrew and Brenda Trejbal, Rockford. Preceded in death by parents, Lewis and Olga Mithoug and grandson, Jared Mithoug. Mr. Mithoug loved to bird hunt, fish, snowmobile and cross country ski. Bob was born in Vancouver, Canada October 12, 1937; he passed away January 11, 2007 in Spokane. He was a lifelong resident of Spo-kane. He graduated from North Central High School in 1955. He was employed by Kaiser as a welder and McClintock and Turk Contractors as a plumber. He belonged to The Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union #44. He enjoyed his garden, swimming pool, his RV and many camping trips with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Margaret Waiting. He is survived by his best friend and companion Roberta Stehr of Spokane, his sons Gregory Waiting of Spokane, Chris Waiting of Pullman, Kendall Waiting of McDonough, Georgia, his daughter Denise Waiting of Pullman, his sister Judith Perry of Stanwood, WA, his former wife Carol Lewis of Lewiston, ID, three granddaughters and one grandson, three stepchildren, two stepgrand-children and two stepgreat-grandchildren, many aunts, uncles and cousins. DECHENNE, Virgil Ame
(Age 87)

Passed away January 10, 2007 at his home in St. John, WA. He was born September 14, 1919 in Sprague, WA to Ame and Nellie Dechenne. Virgil married Dana Hargrave in Coeur d'Alene on August 14, 1961. His lifelong passion was farming and he enjoyed spending time working in his shop on his farm equipment. He loved spending time with his family, gardening, and taking care of his many animals at the farm. Virgil is survived by his wife Dana Dechenne of St. John; three daughters, Janice Hargrave of Potlatch, ID, Cindy Lyden and her husband Lenny of Valleyford, WA and Charlene Smick and her husband Gary of Mukilteo, WA; four granddaughters, Jolee Cano and her husband Guillermo, Kara Green and her husband Sid, Tessa Smick and Kate Lyden; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Dean Dechenne and his wife Billie of St. John and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles Dechenne and a sister, Nancy Smith. NICOLAI, Jan M.
(Age 53)

Jan, beloved wife, grandmother, mother, sister, and good friend to so many, lost her battle with cancer on January 10th, 2007. Jan's legacy and pride live on through her family; husband, Rick Wallander; children, Thia Nicolai, Adria Nicolai, Charles Wallander, John Wallander, PeterWallander, Mary Claire Wallander and grandson (her pride and joy) Braydn Nicolai. Also survived by siblings, Joel Allwardt, Lewis Allwardt, JudyAnderson and sister-in-law, Linda Allwardt. Jan was born August 25th, 1953 to Erna Keusterman and Roland (Ronnie) Allwardt in Spokane, Washington. She graduated from North Central High School, and lived and worked in Spokane for many years before deciding to pursue a profession as a chaplain. She had completed her Bachelors at Gonzaga University, and was currently enrolled in the Masters program there. Jan was very passionate about healing and helping others. She was a Reiki master, Spiritual Director, Hospice Chaplain Volunteer, and most recently, a Chaplain at Empire Health Services. She completed the Sacred Art of Dying Program and was an apprentice in the Anamcara Project. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish and on the school board at Trinity Catholic School. She spearheaded the Prayer Shawl ministry at St. Joseph's and at several local hospitals. A Rosary service will be held on Sunday, January 14th at 7 pm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1503 W Dean Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday January 15th, at 10 am. Reception will follow at Center Point, 1408 North Washington Street. In lieu of flowers, please honor Jan's wishes and consider a donation to Trinity Catholic School.

ARBACAUSKAS, Alec, Sr.
(Age 87)

passed away January 9, 2007, Spokane, WA. He was born March 15, 1919 in Scranton, PA to Christopher and Martha Arbacauskas. Alec was in the Army Air Corp during WWII in Corsica, Italy. During his time in Italy he drove an ammunition truck. He married Shirley Ann Mudgett on December 12, 1942 in Boise, Idaho and settled in the Spokane area in 1948. Alec worked at Columbia Lighting in Spokane for 33 years and retired in 1981. After retirement he and Shirley spent time traveling in their RV and wintering in Arizona. Alec loved to camp and fish and spend time with his family. His jokes and pranks will be missed. He is preceded in death by his parents Christopher and Martha, brothers Joseph and Frank, three sisters Mary, Nellie, and Helen, and son-in-law Robert Lambert. passed away on January 9, 2007 in Renton, WA. He was born on September 3, 1923 in Lexington, MS to Bertha and Jessie Coats. He was a World War II Veteran in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. In 1946 he moved to Spokane, WA, where he spent most of his life. Willie worked and retired from Kaiser Aluminum after 36 years. He was a member of the Masonic Temple. FOWLER, Fern J.
(Age 83)

passed away at home January 9, 2007. She was born Fern J. Markow in New Butler, WI on September 5, 1923, and worked as a riveter during World War II. Later she served as a dietician for the Riverside School District. After her retirement she worked at the Skyway Cafe in Spokane, and finally quit working at the age of 80. She was a member of Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church. Her husband, John Fowler of Spokane, preceded her in death. She is survived by three children, two stepchildren, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At her request no services will be held. HOFFMAN, Lula Mae
(Age 96 ½ )

Entered into rest on January 9, 2007. She is survived by her daughters Lois Halsey of Mead, WA and Lola (Bill) McCall of St. Joseph, MO; her brother, Delbert Cress of Spokane, WA; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, six great, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Louis, in 1981; two sisters, Mabel Rupnow and Marjory Schepman; brother, Lawrence Cress; son-in-law, Robert Howard Halsey; and two granddaughters. Lula was born in Valleyford, WA in 1910, and was a longtime member of the Spring Hill Grange. She and her husband, Louis, enjoyed camping and fishing. She had a thorough enjoyment of life, and was the family's strength and guardian angel! Visitation for Lula will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007, from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home, 1306 N. Monroe, Spokane, WA. A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 15, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Fairmount Memorial Park, 5200 W. POWERS, Edward A.
(Age 92)

Born July 29, 1914 in Deering, ND; passed away January 9, 2007 in Spokane, WA. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret of Spokane; daughter, Mary of Spokane; brothers, Paul and James; and special double niece, Marilyn Gombosky. Edward was a resident of the Spokane area for over 60 years. He was a life member of the VFW #1435. He served in the 91st Infantry during WWII and received the Bronze Star for outstanding technical ability in radio communication. He was a gentle man with a sweet personality and charming wit. His amazing talents included barbering, math and science, gardening and marked athletic ability, especially basketball. He loved fishing. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix, electronically. MILAND, Evelyn Virginia
(Age 83)

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was born in Oxford, Nebraska on February 6, 1923 to Henry and Sylvia Bassett Gragg. Ev entered into peaceful rest on January 4, 2007. She worked at the Spokesman Review for twenty-three years in the Classified Ads department. A couple of years after retiring in 1987, volunteering for Hospice became a main focus in life for her. She assisted patients for approximately a year before dedicating her time to a different volunteer service: The Spokane Police Department. While volunteering, her main duties consisted of Parking Violations enforcement, guarding the Spokane Transit Authority building in downtown Spokane, and many other critical tasks. Due to medical reasons, Evelyn was forced to set volunteering aside following five years of dedicated service. Evelyn spent the remaining years of her life tending to her family and friends. Her favorite activities were swimming, keeping in touch with family, and dining. Garage sale browsing was also a favorite of hers, until QVC updated this hobby. She is survived by her sons, James E. Sisler, Robert D. Sisler, and Steven L. Sisler. Her surviving grandchildren are James Sisler, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Ronald Sisler, Atlanta, GA, Evelyn Sisler, Bellbrook, OH, Kyle, Michael, Shyana, and Chelsey Sisler, Spokane, WA. Services were held on January 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Spokane, WA.

FUNSETH, Ellen Lewis

was born on April 2, 1918, in Deer Park, Washington, to Edwin and Gertrude Lewis. After her father's death, she and her mother moved to Spokane, WA where Ellen graduated from North Central High School. She attended the University of Washington, majoring in library science. She married Anders Edwin Funseth in August, 1945, and they had a daughter, Catherine Ann, the following year. Ellen died on January 1, 2007. During her working life she held many positions. Ellen was the book room clerk at Shaw Junior High in District #81. She also worked at Whitlock's Pharmacy in the office. Later, she was the executive secretary to Howard Cleavinger at the Spokane Daily Chronicle. She tried retirement, but decided to work for the Spokane Symphony in fund raising. At Whitworth College she worked in the Endowment Office. An avid volunteer, she helped create the Women's Auxiliary of the Union Gospel Mission. Then she went on to help establish Anna Ogden Hall for Women as an extension of the Mission. At Knox Presbyterian Church, she was an elder, also acting as superintendent and teacher for the Sunday School and as an assistant to two different pastors. Ellen and Ed were active in their Sunday School class, the Gleaners. Ellen also served as President of the Board for Presbyterian Ministries, which was responsible for Presbyterian retirement homes in Washington. She was a Guardian of Job's Daughters Bethel #64 and Worthy Matronof Loyalty Chapter #210 Order of the Eastern Star. Her hobbies included reading and classical music. She is preceded in death by her husband in 1974. Her survivors include her daughter, Cathy Sebring; grandson, Jeffrey Sebring; granddaughter, Katie Stamps; and grandson-in-law, Keith Stamps. The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses at Avalon Care Facility for their kindness and superior care during Ellen's decline. Since she was a founder of Anna Ogden Hall, please send donations to them in lieu of flowers. A Funeral Service will be held on January 18, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, 806 W. KEMMISH, Marjory E.
(Age 92)

Passed away in Edmonds, WA on December 25, 2006. Born in Forsyth, MT on October 9, 1914 Marjory grew up in Miles City, MT where she met and married Lloyd W. Kemmish in May of 1939. Following Lloyd's military service she and her family moved to Spokane where she resided over 55 years. More recently, in 2002, she moved to the Seattle area to be nearer her family.

Marjory was an avid reader; she also enjoyed many other activities including needlepoint, crossword puzzles, games and music. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends and attending weekly Bible studies. Her family was very important to her; there was never a doubt that she loved and supported each member unconditionally. In later years she enjoyed traveling including Europe, Holy Lands, Hawaii and Mexico--one of her most favorite and memorable experiences was viewing the Pyramids while riding a large and friendly camel!

She is survived by her son, Jim Kemmish, Seattle; daughter, Susan J. Kemmish, Boise; three grandchildren, Sara J. Batten, Bellevue,WA; Stephanie A. Batten, Seattle; Caitlin Vaughn, Seattle; one great-grandchild, Chelsea A. Batten, Bellevue. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd.

Known for her kind, caring and gentle spirit, Margie was loved by all who knew her.

MORDEN, Robert Evans "Bob"

Our beloved father joined his wife Diane of 50 years in heaven on January 2, 2007. Mom passed away at home 29 days prior to Dad. Dad passed away at home after a brief battle with cancer. He was born to Alvin and Lillian Morden, October 16, 1933, in Spearfish, South Dakota. He loved fishing and enjoyed the great outdoors. Dad enjoyed his family, his yard, and garden. He shared many gallons of raspberries. He was in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He spent numerous years in the Army Reserve. He was very proud of his travels around the world. He spent many years working the flour mill circuit. He started in the 1960's at the Spokane Flour Mill, when it closed he went to Canada, and helped with the Rogers Mill, when finished there he ended up in The Dalles Oregon Flour Mill. From there on to the Portland, Oregon Mill, and finally ended up at the Fisher Flour Mill of Seattle, Washington. He was a great millwright. He retired from Salk Middle School as a custodian, working for School District #81. While working at Salk, he put on many barbecues, and also helped take the students fishing, on those special days. Dad always encouraged all the children in his family to enjoy the outdoors. He is survived by his three children: Anita Russell of Spokane, Robert Morden Jr. of Spokane and Marty (Kathy) Morden of Mead, Washington. He had six grandchildren: Kristina and Sarah Russell, Robbie and Patricia Morden of Spokane, and Eddie and Billy Morden of Mead, Washington; three great-grandchildren: Zion, Serenity of Spokane and Kymberlie of Mead, Washington; one brother Sam (Gladys) Morden of Everett; four sisters: Clara (Bob) Heirman of Snohomish, and Pam (Larry) Gonwick of Spokane, Anita Yonko of East Wen-atchee, and Gail (Gary) Berndt of Cle Elum; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Diane, his parents Alvin and Lillian Morden of Wenatchee, and sisters Pat Battermann of East Wenatchee and Marion Morden of Vancouver, and one brother Alvin Morden of Wenatchee, also sister-in-law Beverly Morden and brother-in-law Leonard Battermann of East Wenatchee. Memorial services will be January 22, 2007 at 11:00 am at St. Aloysius Church. After the service we will have the burial of both at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
