Gay district could hurt business

In response to your article "Gay business area has its merits" (Dec. 11), may I point out some demerits also. Nothing we will do can prevent businesses from centering in a certain location unless it is detrimental to that location, such as sex, pornography and gambling businesses.

However, to have our business and convention bureau promote a homosexual community will do more harm then help and will make our city seem an anti-family city.

May I illustrate: I belong to some 30 business and social organizations so have a goodly number of conventions to choose from to attend. Many years ago, San Francisco was a popular convention place for these organizations. However the last 35 years, since San Francisco has become a homosexual capital, not one of these organizations has announced a convention in San Francisco.

If we promote Spokane as a homosexual-friendly city, it would discourage pro-family conventions.

I am sure promoting Spokane as a homosexual-friendly city would bring some conventions but drive some away. I suggest you just leave well-enough alone and not bring more dividing issues into Spokane. We have already many good things to promote our city on.
