When the Davenport Hotel officially opened 88 years ago this month, one writer observed: "Spokane last night underwent the transition from a big country town into a metropolis."
The mayor, Washington's governor, Marguerite "Miss Spokane" Motie and 1,000 other celebrants attended a banquet to mark that occasion.
This weekend, following two years and more than $30 million in renovations, the hotel officially reopens with similar flair.
An opening ceremony is today at 5 p.m. in
the hotel's Grand Pennington Ballroom. Special guests including Mayor John Powers, Rep. George Nethercutt and Louis Davenport's grandson will join hundreds of celebrants for banquets, ballroom dancing, live music and poetry readings through the weekend. The basement spa, lap pool and fitness center will open, along with 234 of the hotel's 284 rooms. The hotel's gift shop, florist and art gallery also will be open.
