Sure, the Davenport Hotel is over-the-top gorgeous. But it would be a shame to reserve it only for special occasions. I've been making a daily coffee run just to sample all the outstanding pastries with my cup of velvety-smooth Illy espresso.

So far, it's been hard to pick a favorite. The cookies are chewy and rich. The pecan tart with chocolate chips is downright sinful. The muffins are moist and the croissants are flaky and light, despite all that butter I just know is in there.

And then I tasted the coffee cake, and that was it. I'm in love.

The recipe comes from owner Walt Worthy's sister. And it tastes like something that Betty Crocker would surely give a big thumbs up.

This simple eye opener is made with sour cream, so it's ultra-moist. The topping is brown sugar and chopped nuts with a hint of cinnamon, for a down-home feel you wouldn't expect amid such opulence.

Maybe it's just the ticket to draw a whole new audience -- one that won't feel intimidated wandering into such a spectacular setting and ordering a cup of tea and a wedge of coffee cake and then taking a seat in one of the cozy chairs in the lobby.
