 Maryland 80, (5) Michigan State 62: Greivis Vasquez and Dave Neal each scored 17 points, and unranked Maryland hustled its way to an upset of the Spartans.

 After falling behind by three early in the first half, the Terrapins (4-0) countered with a 23-5 run to take the lead for good.

 Travis Walton led the Spartans (2-1) with 16 points.

 Maryland shot 9 of 19 on 3-pointers while Michigan State went 2 for 9. Spartans star Raymar Morgan got into early foul trouble and managed only four points.

 The Terrapins shot 51 percent from the field and took advantage of 15 MSU turnovers.

 (21) Georgetown 58, Wichita State 50: Austin Freeman scored 18 points and DaJuan Summers added 14 to lead the Hoyas over the Shockers.

 Greg Monroe added 11 points for Georgetown (3-0).

 Georgetown preserved the victory by making all eight free throws during the last minute of the game.

 Wichita State (2-2) got 11 points from David Kyles, while Ramon Clemente had 10.

 After seeing a 10-point, second-half lead cut to one, Freeman made a jumper and Summers hit a 3 to extend the Georgetown advantage to 48-42 with 4 minutes remaining.

 (12) Tennessee 78, Siena 64: Wayne Chism scored 15 points to lead the Volunteers to a victory over the Saints.

 Renaldo Woolridge and Tyler Smith each added 14 for the Vols (4-0). Alex Franklin led Siena (2-1) with 17.

 The Vols went on a 17-0 run late in the first half and pulled away to a 47-27 halftime lead. Siena scored the first 11 points of the second half, but could not get closer than nine. The Vols led by as many as 21 in the second half.

About the event

The 2007 men's NCAA basketball tournament starts Thursday. First-round games at the Spokane Arena start Friday.
