Davenport memory

Submitted by:
Verla Jean (Martin) Davies

Little did I know what the Davenport Hotel held in store for me. As a young Lewis & Clark High School lass, I sought and found employment at THE hotel. I worked there after school as a banquet waitress from 1954 through 1956. In the fall of 1956, a friend arranged a blind date for me with a handsome student from Washington State College. After an exciting football game at Albi Stadium, we made our way to the Davenport Hotel. To the beautiful strains of the Benny Goodman Orchestra I had my first dancing lessons. What a thrilling time I had. My blind date and I married in June 1958 and will celebrate our 44th anniversary this June. With the grand reopening of this beautiful hotel, we look forward to a return visit that includes an overnight stay, for old time's sake.
