Almost two decades since I was in the Davenport, the memory ofthat occasion is as vivid as … that winter evening in 1983 when guests, attired in formal evening wear, filed into the hotel's main lobby for the Spokane Symphony's marathon concert.
An idyllic evening where music lovers roamed the atrium auditorium, dunking strawberries in wine, witty conversation competing with gourmet hors d'oeuvres: the occasion choreographed with music ranging from
Fanfare to the Common Man to Ode to Joy and more.
It was like a scene from a 40s Gothic Romance, with guests arriving to spend a fortnight at the manor house; the classic melodies lingering as guests retired way past midnight to upstairs chambers.
A leisurely breakfast the next morning, consisting of famous Davenport waffles, was the best part, before driving home to Idaho's reality and routine.
