Davenport memory

Submitted by:
Lorraine Linnenkamp

Dear Sir, On August 15, 1945 we moved from Salem, Oregon to Spokane. The war had ended the day before. My father's company made reservations for us to stay at the Davenport Hotel for 5 days until we could locate a house. I was 16 and that hotel was the most lavish and beautiful place I had ever seen. To be able to stay there was beyond comprehension for our family. There were canaries in cages, the fireplace going night and day and that beautiful fountain in the lobby. The elevator boys of course were about my age and made things interesting. Those were the days of bellhops also and ladies in hats and gloves walking with men in hats and topcoats. When I graduated 2 years later from Lewis & Clark we had our Senior Prom in the Marie Antoinette Room. Such beautiful memories. I am so glad that we will again have that magnificent hotel.
