Davenport memory

This is 4-H's centennial celebration year and in compiling history of our Stevens County 4-H program, past 4-Hers reflect on the Sears Roebuck sponsored banquets held at the Davenport. Verna Steele Dubois recorded in her 1949 Secretary's book that requirements to attend were receving a blue
ribbon for gardening(1500 sq. feet & at least 12 different varieties) canning (at least 75 quarts of 8 different varieties) and food preparation a blue in a county contest preparing a breakfast, lunch or dinner. The attendees had their choice of a 4-H sweater or $5 in cash. Verna still has her sweater! I attended in the early 60's and these awards were replaced by small trophies, which I still have. This was one of the outstanding events in the life of these 4-H youth and the memories are still vivid of traveling to the city of Spokane with your mother and attending a lavish social event at the Davenport Hotel.
