Davenport memory
Submitted by:

I have a special place in my heart for the Davenport Hotel. I worked as a "Bus Boy" at the Davenport in 1951 part time. I was attending Lewis & Clark High School during this period. I remember when a special banquet was given, so I played hooky from school. Was I ever embarrassed! I served coffee to my high school principle. This taught me a very valuable lesson. Be honest! In this capacity, I saw several of the rooms. They had a vast collection of silverware that was highly polished. This was on display in a large glass case. I don't feel this was all of it, but could have been. Just some to show off.
I had attended dances at the Davenport and made special trips there to exchange my money for their specially cleaned and polished money. The Davenport made special efforts to ensure their money looked as fresh as though it came from the mint. If I wanted the best shoe shine, it was always the Davenport that had the best shoe shiners.
