  • Beginnings
    PART ONE -- 1900 - 1925
At the beginning of the 1900s, Spokane was a small, dusty town ruled by railroads.

During the first quarter century, mining, timber and farming brought prosperity and growth to the region. Automobiles eventually replaced streetcars. Homes got electricity and plumbing. And residents settled down from the wild, rowdy days of old.

"A Century in Review" is a celebration of the 20th century in Spokane and the Inland Northwest. This section looks at the region's rich history over the first 25 years of the 1900s.

Subsequent keepsake sections also will cover 25-year periods, and will be published quarterly, in June, September and November. The sections will be filled with the stories and photographs that appeared in The Spokesman-Review during each quarter century.

We hope you enjoy the look back.
