5th Congressional District
About this race: Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a two-term incumbent and former state legislator, is pitted against Democrat Mark Mays, a lawyer and psychologist who is making his first run for public office. The district once routinely elected Democrat Tom Foley, who rose to be speaker of the House, but he lost the 1994 election to Spokane lawyer George Nethercutt; it has been solidly Republican ever since.
