Commissioner of Public Lands
About this race: Okanogan rancher and former congressional candidate Peter Goldmark, a Democrat, is challenging Republican Doug Sutherland, who's been the state commissioner of public lands since 2000. The little-known job is one of the biggest in the state: a lands commissioner oversees millions of acres of state- and privately owned forests, grazing land, tidelands and lake beds. The millions of dollars raised each year from timber harvests and land leases help pay for public schools, colleges and other state projects. The commissioner oversees the state's Department of Natural Resources.
Constituency: Washington State
Salary: $119,234
