Election 2006 voters guide

Senate District 6

About this race: Elected to four-year terms, a state senator represents a district during annual legislative sessions. They work on laws and budget issues, and work with district residents who have concerns about laws and state services. Terms are staggered so that half of the Senate is up for election every even-numbered year.

Constituency: The 6th district is an suburban crescent nestled around western Spokane. It's increasingly viewed as a battleground for Democrats eager to win a Senate seat that's long -- since 1943 -- been held by Republicans.

Salary: $35,254
