Election 2006 voters guide

Proposition 1 (school funding)

What it will do:

This measure would require the state Legislature to raise $200 million (an amount equal to what would be raised by increasing the Idaho sales tax by one percentage point), effective July 1, 2007, to fund K-12 education.

Supporters say:

Idaho currently ranks 45th in the nation in education spending. The measure will help reduce class sizes, improve infrastructure and attract higher-quality teachers and staff.

Opponents say:

The measure will increase the tax burden on Idaho citizens and comes on the heels of a sales tax rate increase.
