Man killed in N. Idaho stabbing ID'd

Updated at 1:44 p.m. | A man stabbed to death Thursday was identified this morning as 41-year-old David Lynn Foreman of Rathdrum. Kootenai County Sheriff's detectives continue to investigate the case in which woman said she was being raped before fighting off her attacker and killing him, Capt. Ben Wolfinger said in a news release.

Powder found in downtown building not harmful

Updated at 12:41 p.m. | The Spokane Fire Department has determined that a suspicious powder located in the Washington Trust Bank building in downtown Spokane was not harmful. A fire dispatcher said an employee found a suspicious powder and then called emergency crews. "It wasn't anything hazardous," Officer Teresa Fuller said. Traffic is now open on Sprague Avenue.

Lytle challenges competency determination

Updated at 1:04 p.m. | The father of 4-year-old torture-beating victim Summer Phelps is demanding a hearing to challenge whether he is mentally competent to stand trial on homicide-by-abuse charges. Jonathan Lytle refused at a court hearing today to sign a court waiver that put the criminal case against him on hold until he underwent a psychiatric examination.

Spokane Naval Trophy coming home to port

Updated at 2:37 p.m. | The Spokane Naval Trophy – listed first among the historical collections at the U.S. Naval Center, the Navy’s central history office in Washington, D.C. – is returning to Spokane on the occasion of its centennial. It will on display for the public Monday through Friday at the Navy Operational Support Center.


Access to Duncan mental evaluation denied

The public doesn't have a constitutional right to see the mental evaluation of Joseph Duncan, a federal judge in Boise ruled Thursday before sealing results of the killer's psychiatric examination.

Homegrown hero: MVP Johnson makes city proud

Sometimes you never know just what it is you're growing.This is almost 10 years ago now. Mark Rypien, the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player who deep down probably harbored dreams of centering a Stanley Cup line, had opened up an ice rink in the Spokane Valley in a venture that, alas, would not end well. The Spokane Chiefs made it their practice headquarters to cement a happy relationship with him, squeezing their workouts in between the private lessons and midget tournaments.
