Nearly 50 years ago Avis began running a series of ads stating that their status behind leader Hertz in the rent-a-car game meant they tried harder. I don’t know if Hyundai is familiar with the slogan, but if effort is any gauge, the Korean automaker can count itself among the “We try harder because we have to’’ set.

I used it all through high school and college. It was usually reliable and always fast. After college, life started getting complicated and poor Old Gold sat neglected for 12 long years, until I started her restoration in 2003.
