

Car for car, Audi designs the best interiors in the business.

Nearly 50 years ago Avis began running a series of ads stating that their status behind leader Hertz in the rent-a-car game meant they tried harder. I don’t know if Hyundai is familiar with the slogan, but if effort is any gauge, the Korean automaker can count itself among the “We try harder because we have to’’ set.

More than two decades ago, Melora Hardin’s acting career was about to be put on the fast track thanks in part to a cool set of wheels. But when Michael J. Fox was cast as the lead in “Back to the Future,” the teenaged Texan missed out on her opportunity to play his on-screen girlfriend because of her height, and, as a result, never got to ride in the most famous DeLorean sports car (powered by a flux capacitor) in history.


These days, when we hear the word “tarmac,” we think of the place where airplanes taxi, take off, and park. Indeed, generic use of the term is generally intended to make that aeronautical reference.


This week, we’re driving a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SE, still noted in the auto industry as the brand that invented the minivan.

Dear Mike: I recently purchased a set of Pulstar plugs and had them installed in my three-month-old 2008 Chevy Colorado, the five-cylinder model, hoping to improve the terrible gas mileage of 12.3 mpg.

Why I love it: “Old Gold” was purchased new and served as the family car for 14 years (the pic shows my sister and I on the day it was purchased). In 1985 I turned 16 and it became mine. I used it all through high school and college. It was usually reliable and always fast. After college, life started getting complicated and poor Old Gold sat neglected for 12 long years, until I started her restoration in 2003.
