New jobless filings skyrocket

WASHINGTON – The number of newly laid off people filing claims for unemployment benefits bolted past 400,000 last week as companies trimmed their work forces to cope with a slowing economy and fallout from a collapsed housing market.

Home sales down sharply

WASHINGTON – Sales of existing homes fell more sharply than expected in June as the housing industry continued to be bruised by the worst slump in more than two decades.

Ford posts $8.67 billion loss for second quarter

DEARBORN, Mich. – Ford Motor Co. posted the worst quarterly performance in its history Thursday, losing $8.67 billion in the second quarter.

Potlatch quarterly earnings drop

Spokane-based Potlatch reported second quarter earnings of $21.5 million and 54 cents per share, compared with $34 million and 87 cents per share from the same period in 2007.

Friday focus: Personal finance

Qualifying for a mortgage certainly is not as easy as it used to be. The turmoil that has gripped the housing and the credit markets has led to lenders tightening their approval standards.
