I'm in Pre-AP Lang Arts, and AP US History, as well as Chem, a junior class. We haven't had any real tests yet, but APUSH honored us with a pretest, of which I am doing poorly on. And we had homework over the summer in Pre-AP, and I had homework first day in all of the above mentioned classes.

Yeah, Chloe! I don't think I've ever had anyone agree with me on this whole blog! But anyway, I also agree that McCain is trying to lure Hillary supporters into going elephant. However, I've talked to three or more women that say, basically, "If McCain is stupid enough to believe that if you liked Hillary, all you want is a woman in office, then he shouldn't be president. Just because you support Hillary doesn't mean you'll transfer your vote over in a snap because Palin is a female."

I've gotta agree with Jules. I think McCain was trying to be different...bring some new names and representations of America into the election. New meat is exciting, right?

I think McCain could also be trying to scoop up some of the voters Hillary had behind her wanting a women in office - she had a good-sized following that McCain's trying to tap into with a female VP.

While saying that, it frightens me to think that she could possibly hold so much power in our government. I think McCain needed someone younger and more Obama-esque; Palin satisfied this choice, and the decision was made without thorough thought.

Posted by Jules at Palin gives speech at Republican Convention at 6 Sep 8:29 PM:

Wow, lots of good thoughts in these comments... I must say that I agree with Jeremiah and David most. Palin did give a pretty good speech, but after all, that is mostly her speech-writer's job. I wasn't impressed with her confidence level. Overall, I think McCain's pick will surely generate talk, but will it be good or bad? Who knows? Who else loves election time?

Posted by Jules at No surprise here at 6 Sep 8:17 PM:

Personally, I think it's pretty obvious why McCain chose Palin. He was trying to shake up the race. Romney, in my opinion, would have been the obvious choice, the one at least I was betting he would make. Though I am a Democrat and like Barack Obama (much more than Hillary Clinton) I do admit that Palin's acceptance speech at the RNC was impressive. We'll have to wait and see if this works out!

Posted by David at Palin gives speech at Republican Convention at 6 Sep 4:52 PM:

Gross, gross, gross!! Sarah Palin is probably the worst move John McCain could've made in this electoral situation. She's inexperienced beyond fathomable reason, she's the governor of a state that is nowhere near nor similar to any of the continental United States, and she harps on all this family union crap while she has a four-month old child with Down syndrome and a pregnant 17-year old daughter on the loose. Will Palin add or subtract votes for McCain? Though she might bring more right-wing Republicans back in, I think might distance voters from the McCain campaign even more.

And Margaret, yes, about a third of the nation wants health care to be widespread. Why not? Health is THE most important thing in a country. WHY are we spending so much money battling AIDS and malaria in Africa, when the our own Americans are fighting anything from influenza to cancer? WHY should only the upper and middle class be able to access medical facilities, and not the lower class, even when our national philosophy is that "all men are created equal"?

I definitely agree with Jeremiah. Obama may be inexperienced, but that inexperience thrust him past Clinton, Edwards, Biden, and MANY other EXPERIENCED candidates for the ticket. Palin? No would've given her a care in the world if McCain hadn't shooed her in.

As for the speech...lol...I didn't think it was great. Better than McCain's, but not close to the caliber of the Dems. Guiliani just bashed too much.

Margaret, do you even know what socialism is?

Second...I know Obama lacks as much experience as McCain, but he's on the national map...Sarah Palin wasn't even heard of outside of Alaska until McCain put her on the GOP ticket...I've seen Sarah Palin's credentials, and I'll admit that it's a commendable leap from mayor of a tiny town to governor of a state in such a short time, but I also don't want her near the presidency.

And I also don't agree with her on any issues...except for putting an end to corruption...and even then, she's no angel herself.

Not sure where you're getting your numbers. From Rasmussen Reports:

"...Palin is viewed favorably by 58% of American voters." "Perhaps most stunning is the fact that Palin’s favorable ratings are now a point higher than either man at the top of the Presidential tickets this year. As of Friday morning, Obama and McCain are each viewed favorably by 57% of voters. Biden is viewed favorably by 48%."

Posted by Margaret at Palin gives speech at Republican Convention at 5 Sep 1:28 PM:

I can almost say "thank you" to Medea for sticking to the issues. If you don't like the views and issue position of a particular candidate, then it's entirely OK not to vote for them. I for one, am fearful of the socialist views of Obama, the huge tax increases that are over the horizon with him as potential president, and seriously, does anyone want health care run in the same manner as Amtrak, the IRS, and the Postal Service? However, you're wrong about McCain being a hypocrite. Sarah's lack of experience, or lack thereof, only shows to the country that Obama lacks even that much. While you and others decry Sarah's experience, you only prove the lack of Obama's, and the fact that you believe that a candidate should have significant amounts of experience. You can't argue against Sarah as vice president without arguing against Obama for president. I think you're all making McCain's point.

Posted by Margaret at No surprise here at 5 Sep 1:20 PM:

Makes great sense to me. The person with the most experiece? Of course not, but then again Obama has less. What Sarah Palin brings to the ticket is an outsider; someone that can connect to the average American. What should McCain have done, chosen another rich white guy. While I think Romney would have made a good pick, Sarah Palin brings in excitement, change, and a breath of fresh air. Obama has been running for months on nothing more than "star status." He hasn't been running on anything he's done in any sort of a leadership position. The election has been energized. It's fun just watching the democrats falling over themselves trying to attack Sarah. McCain has been all but forgotten. Fun, Fun, Fun.

Posted by Medea at Palin gives speech at Republican Convention at 5 Sep 1:12 PM:

I really don't care much for Palin. She might be a fine person, but her views are far too conservative for my taste. Knowing her position on abortion, gay rights, education, the environment, the war, etc. I can't really say I want her anywhere near the presidency. Not to mention that McCain is now a hypocrite in my eyes, constantly slamming Obama for his lack of experience and then picking Palin as his VP.

Posted by qwerty626 at Palin gives speech at Republican Convention at 5 Sep 8:34 AM:

That arguement about McCain dying in office is getting really old (pun intended). ANYONE can die in office...young, old, in between, whatever. Including NObama!! Get real! YOU can drop dead today, regardless of your age or health. That's a fact of life. We don't get out of it alive.

Posted by Corrine at Palin gives speech at Republican Convention at 4 Sep 11:16 PM:

I like Palin as a person. She felt relatable. And yet, as I watched her speech (and I sat through the whole thing) I was not struck by any of the contennt of her speech, but rather her poise and confidence. In my opinion, Obama has both the great speaking style and the content to back it up. I also agree with the concern that Jeremiah has. I do not feel confident that Palin could run this country if McCain died. Otherwise, I think it will be interesting to see if Palin helps McCain or just ends up taking the spotlight off of him.

You guys are funny...kool aid...smoking...wow. I must say that I expected more from you two, but then, a lot of teenagers can't voice their opinions intelligently...unless you aren't really in this age group, which should worry some people.

I'm more worried about John McCain dying in office...the man has serious health problems (at least four bouts of cancer that I can remember, and he has spots on his skin removed on a regular basis), and if he dies in office, Sarah Palin will not be able to run this country, she simply does not have the experience.

And as for Obama surrounding himself with people who know what they're doing, that's the idea...a wise man doesn't assume that he knows everything or that he can get the job done by himself...the wise man surrounds himself with those wiser than he is.

So, you guys can insult all you want..just makes you look immature and me laugh my head off.

Posted by Tom at Palin gives speech at Republican Convention at 4 Sep 11:45 AM:

Jeremiah, seriously, put down the cool aid. Hillary, although a woman, is no different than those elitist men like Biden and Obama. If that's what you want, than so be it. However, it seems the American public has no such desire. Perhaps there are some bitter feminists still railing against the machine, but most Hillary supporters have moved on. Now comes a woman with a real connection to the average man and woman. While she may not have worlds of political experience, isn't that what everyone has been wanting? How can "change" occur when the same entitled politicians keep control. Does anyone really, truly believe, after Obama surrounds himself with the insiders of the Washington beltway, that he will really do anything different than what's already being done? This is exactly why Senators so rarely get to this point. Regardless of the outcome, a Senator will be president. Who do we want in the second seat? Another insider?

As a second thought, does anyone else find it strange that Obama is trying so hard to compare himself to Palin, and not McCain? Who's running against who?

All the neighborhood kids hung out at our place.

You suckers! (Just kidding!) The high school bus went by... the middle school bus went by... the elementary school bus went by... and I was still asleep! To my credit though, I did do some math later on in the day. (I started my math last week.) That is, after I spent a couple of hours on the computer! What sucks for me though is that I already have most of my school books, whereas everyone else is just starting to get their's. That means that at any moment my mom could say "Find a pencil and get crackin'!" Truth be told, I do have somewhat of a "schedule" that I stick to. Even so, I'll probably be done with school by the beginning of May! I sign up for Home-Link classes tomorrow so, I'm excited!

As far as changes go, well the food could be better. The "lunchroom" is always crowded. The bathroom isn't quite very clean. The gym needs some improvement. (Wait a minute... Gym? What Gym?) We need later start times. There's too many distractions. Not enough field trips. Not much funding for "extra curricular activities". Yup. School around here needs some work. I think I need to talk to the school board/superintendent/principal/teacher (AKA Mom) about this...

When I'd see one in the halls looking lost, I'd ask if they needed help and then look at their schedule. If I saw my name, I'd grimace and say, "Oooooh. You got Daniels. BUMMER. Good luck with that..." Hahahhaaa... Sometimes I'd tell them I was kidding and it was me. Sometimes I'd let them come to class the first day and love watching them look confused. Hahahhaaaa... I didn't get all the classes I had even a week ago, and it stinks, because I really wanted to take a few of them... I guess I'll just take them next year! If I could change my school, I would make it go back to starting at 7:55. It's been moved back 10 minutes this year, and it's going to be tough on my family, until I can drive myself to school. And I might rearrange funding so that the academic teams get at least equal to the sports teams. Or at least proportional. I like it, though. It's pretty good.

Wow, she picks 'em huh? It's one thing to get knocked up- but to have the entire nation know it, now that's embarrassing.
This is just one more reason why I don't think Palin will make a good VP. She has a disabled infant and a soon-to-be grandchild to take care of, how will she balance this with the needs of an entire country?

I would like to think that if I was messing around with the governor's daughter, I wouldn't be writing such stupid things on my MySpace page. Regardless, now the WORLD will see it.

This kid's life is over as he knows it. He's a daddy--no more rednecking in the woods. Gonna have to use that beer money on child support, now.

I don't really think that its such a big deal. It shouldn't be taken into consideration when considering her spot on the Republican team. A preg. child doesn't mean she's a bad politician. There are many other things that can point to that; a daughter's choice isn't one of them.

What I think is even a BETTER issue with Palin is this quote from the New York Times article from Labor Day:

"Among other less attention-grabbing news of the day: it was learned that Ms. Palin now has a private lawyer in a legislative ethics investigation in Alaska into whether she abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner; that she was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party, which has at times sought a vote on whether the state should secede; and that Mr. Palin was arrested 22 years ago on a drunken-driving charge."

Not so much the drunk driving charge, but her past in the Independent party and her with the investigation.

Now that is more of an issue.

Answers to "More Questions." I seriously doubt that Palin wished to make public anything about her daughter, and did do only to diffuse silly and inane blog comments about her new son. No doubt she regrets that decision, as she could have just laughed at the bloggers and moved on. As for the lawyer, there is an ongoing investigation by a independent investigator (a very experienced and vetted attorney), but it is also being overseen by Democratic members of the state legislator. Whenever there are issues breaching the separate branches of government, attorneys for both sides are probably warranted. As for her husband's DUI 20 years ago, I'm not sure how that in any way affects Sarah's abilities. As I recall just before the 2000 election it was revealed that Gore's son had received a DUI. I believe the press was quite sympathetic toward Al in that case.

More questions:
Do you think it's good that Bristol and the boy, Levi, are planning to marry? Do you feel it's appropriate for Sarah Palin to put her daughter in the spotlight like that? What do you think about the other embarassing facts that have been released in the last day, such as that Alaska has hired a private attorney for Palin to defend herself in a state ethics investigation, and that her husband had been arrested for drunk driving over 20 years ago?

Let's keep comments on the subject at hand, and not diss anyone's political stances.

Jim and Jeremiah, feel free to debate, but please keep it civil and on-topic.

Jeremiah, you are absolutely right! Wow, how could I have been so stupid. You silly libs didn't release the fact that the daughter was pregnant, you silly libs tried to accuse Palin of covering for her daughter by saying young Trig was Sarah's instead of her daughter's. No, you didn't release anything about the current pregnacy, you made up stories about Sarah's son. Boy, talk about needing to get your head out of your bum! Liberal fools such as yourself couldn't come up with a real story, so you had to create one. I repeat, if this is the best you can come up with, the GOP is going to do great. BTW, I voted democratic in the last Alaska election, and have never been associated with the GOP. But I know brain-dead fools when I see them.

I'm glad to see a 19 yr. old college student is a virgin and has a caring mother and grandmother. ;)
The Palin family is surrounding their daughter and all their chilren with an atmosphere of love and support. That doesn't mean they haven't tried to teach the right values. We all have tried our own choices - some have not turned out well. That's how we learn.
22 yrs. ago we had the same situation in our family. The child and mother turned out to be wonderful adults who contribute well in their community. May God bless the Palin Family.

He was blasting it in a public place? What a baby... I agree with Cash.

Normally I wouldn't weigh in on issues such as this but this one is too close to home not to. Personally I have a Down syndrome child AND my girlfriend got pregnant when we were 17. We have now been married for 20 years.
The fact that this is an issue at all cracks me up, truly. Why are we talking about this? It is SO easy to point the finger at someone when we don't agree with the way they do things.
How many of us can stand up and say that we don't have anything to be ashamed of? How many can say that we've done nothing wrong no matter what we believe?
I would bet a lot of money that Governor Palin's daughter will learn more from this than any other way. I know I did. More than that, she will also be a proponent of abstinence despite her own choices. She didn't do what she believed was right...imagine that? I mean, NO ONE does that!
Someone on here also made the comment that the Governor was too busy with her life to "monitor" her own daughter. Come on, people. Are you serious? Does anyone really believe that teenaged kids don't make their own choices? I guess Sara should have kept her daughter in her sight 100% of the time?

Personally I applaud their honesty about the whole deal and the fact that they are WILLINGLY putting themselves in the face of the American public. They knew this would happen yet did it anyway.

Leave her daughter alone and quit throwing stones from a glass house.

Jim, pull your head out of your bum...us 'libs', as you call members of the Democratic Party didn't dig this up on Gov. Palin...she released it HERSELF...the Democratic Party had nothing, I repeat, NOTHING to do with the announcement of Bristol Palin's pregnancy. I'm sorry if Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Ann Coulter deceived you into believing otherwise, but that's the truth.
