Flag Retirement

The story: In Pullman Wash., members of the American Legion Post 52 and the Boys Scouts of America Troop 477, honorably retire American flags by burning them in a solemn ceremony.

On Flag Day in Pullman, Wash., two generations of men and boys came together to honorably retire about 50 old, torn and weathered American flags. Members of the American Legion Post 52, Boys Scout Troop 477 and about two-dozen onlookers gathered around a bonfire in a field. Kind words about the flag's service were said and taps was played. After the solemn ceremony, each flag was then committed to the fire by teams of Boy Scouts who saluted their ashes.

Many times when I shoot a video, I pre-visualize the story in my mind. That way I have a storyboard to kind of draw from as I am shooting each video story. Rarely my mental storyboard matches the reality of what I end up shooting. This story was freaky. On my drive to Pullman, I pictured the field, bonfire and ceremony that mirrored exactly what was there. Even the shots I conceived in my mind presented themselves to me. This made editing the piece much easier the next day. After capturing and hour and a half of videotape into my computer, my edit took only about four hours to complete.

Colin,

Thank you for the excellent video log. My wife and I attended the ceremony and noticed your diligence in trying to capture the "spirit of the event". I believe you succeeded in doing so.

And thanks for doing a positive news story, when so often news is focused on the bad and negative things.

Great job Colin. I commend you for helping to remind all of us that the flag can, and should have deep personal meaning for each American. The contrast between the old veterans and the young scouts was striking. Yet despite the multiple generation gap, they where single in focus and purpose - respect for the flag and for that which it stands.

Keep up the good work.

I liked your video. I wish more reporters would seek out positive things to give account of. Your piece made me proud to be an American.

Colin,

By far one of your best pieces yet--moving, honest, respectful. I felt moved, and oddly patriotic, and for that I applaud the men, the boys, the families and of course, the flag...

Nice work and powerful vision manifested for all to appreciate!

Colin, You did a beautiful job capturing the emotion of this event! Having done several of these, your video does a great job of collecting the powerful images and sounds that are apart of a respectful flag retirement. You really have put together a clip that can share a piece of Americana that I believe many people have probably never seen. Good Job!
