The story: Remembering the victims of the Wolf Lodge murders one year later.

Produced by Jesse Tinsley

One year ago, three bodies were discovered in a house in the Wolf Lodge area east of Coeur d'Alene. Two children were missing. The murder victims were Mark McKenzie, the home owner, Brenda Groene Matthews, his girlfriend, and Slade Groene, her 13-year-old son. Missing were Shasta and Dylan Groene, Brenda's youngest children. While Shasta was later found alive, the pain of the loss of the Mark, Brenda, and Slade--and later Dylan--is ever present to their families. This week marks one year since the discovery of the first three victims. Reporter Taryn Brodwater interviewed family members about their loved ones, who have slipped from the public eye since the joyful return of young Shasta.

I still remember the shock I felt when I heard about those murders, and that 2 children were missing. I grew up 30 minutes from that area, and I just couldn't believe something so horrible could happen in my homeland. I was so relieved when they found Shasta, yet so devastated when hearing of Dylan's fate. I still think of Shasta often, and pray that she is receiving all the therapy that is most definitely needed. I also pray that Duncan spends the rest of his life in the same misery that he left the Groene family in.

Shasta and her father Steve were Baptized this last Sunday at church. What a wonderful miracle and hopefully a huge renewal for them both.

I truly hope that Shasta, and her father are doing well in health,I had heard that her father is suffering from cancer, and hope he has the chance to over come this horrible disease to be able to be there for Shasta, Shasta has already lost enough family members, I hope that the fact his daughter lived through these horrid times gives her father strength, and a reason to fight as hard as he can. I wish Shasta, and the rest of her family the best, and pray that they have many happy future memories that will bring smiles to their souls, and lives. I wish Shasta the biggest amount of hope to face that monster Joseph Duncan durring the trial, my heart, and soul truly goes to this child, I wish I could do some thing to make her feel something other than the feeling this tragedy has possibly brought her. I truly hope she some day finds inner peace, and has a happy, and full life some day. I truly hope that Joseph Duncan does not get the satisfaction of truly ruining this poor girl, and families life. I have absolutely not the faintest clue what this family could be feeling, or going through right now, but I truly wish that they have a few moments away from the pain they must feel every day by being able to see Shasta smile every once in a while, and be able to see a resemblance of her mother, and brother that have passed, and maby see some influence that Mark may have left behind by being a parental figure in Shastas life.

What comfort can be given to these families that have lost so much and are so broken? How can they ever heal? They have no idea who all has prayed for them and who has cried such tears of sadness and despair for them throughout this country. I wish they could somehow know how wide the grief affected us all.

I am a firm believer that when evil strikes at the heart of man, goodness will abound and rise up to quell the beast back into the pits of Hell. We have witnessed the worst of the worst and the best of the best in human kindness.

Now the time is so near and all we can do is pray that Shasta once again has the heart and strength of a lion.

My family's heart is and always has been with each special person that lost their lives so needlessly. I also pray that Shasta and Steve gather in each others arms to gain strength as they go forward in life together.

God bless the Greone/McKenzie families. Justice will be done.

We are so thankful that Shasta has her father Steve, he has lost alot and God is watching over him and Shasta, and will guide them along the way, Our hearts and thoughts go with them, and Duncan will have his judgement day and he will suffer, we all hope that he get's the death penalty, but even then that would be to good for him, I feel he needs to suffer, but that is my opinion as a mother and grandmother

as the mother of three boys. this repeat offender needs to live in prison for the rest of his life with no chance of parole, and become "girlfriend" to whoever wants it from him. the death penalty is too good for him. Make him suffer, like he made that family suffer.
