I think it's tacky and Ray Ideus has hoiked a loogie in the face of Spokane Christians with the help of the ACLU. If I found out the police chaplain in my home was an atheist, I'd kick him all the way to the curb. Who's he praying to? Of course he's free to worship his living room carpet if he wants to, it's a free country. But he shouldn't be a chaplain, and chaplains should have been able to keep their crosses. Shame on Ray Ideus and kudos to the city for giving his lawyers pennies for fighting for his stupid cause.Posted by toadman at One more -- or one fewer -- cross to bear at 11 Dec 9:17 AM:
Also.. this country is NOT Judeo Christian, even though the majority of deists in this country are. This countries founders expressly FORBADE adding religion to government. They did not want a theocracy. We've seen what the ideology of Theocracy can do, and it's not pretty (Afghanistan). This country is founded on the principles of freedom, and freedom alone. We are free to be whatever religion we desire, or to have no religion whatsoever. Any addition of religious iconography to publicly paid officials, especially a police force, smacks of theocracy, and makes me cringe.
Sorry man.. I'm gonna have to disagree with you strongly about this...

One More Thing: THERE IS NO PROTEST THAT IS WORTH THE CAUSE WHEN IT BRINGS A LEVEL III SEX OFFENDER WITHIN A SCHOOL ZONE!!!! I understand that this was not the issue at hand - however, it was a VERY CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER with the creation of the camp so close to the Stevens School, connected with the timing of the Closure of the Otis Hotel. It was IGNORANT to create the Tent City without concern for the safety of the residents already in the neighborhood. By bringing into a community not only an unusual situation, but one of potential danger to a child, is not HELPFUL to the homeless cause at all. I am very aware as to why the landowner gave the property up, and respect the right and decision to do it - but the result in the long run has been more negative than positive - at least in this case.Posted by Tyrone on Napa (from Virginia) at What if there were a Tent City III? at 2 Dec 8:17 AM:

The fairgrounds is actually a good idea. It has cooking facilities... restrooms and showers... shelter... convenient bus stops. The winter events out there are things like gun shows, the Christmas Bureau (which could be of service to many tent city residents) and flat-track racing, which use only a portion of the facilities. Even a big event like the boat show (in February) leaves some buildings empty.
The nearest schools are on the opposite side of Interstate 90.

They're frustrated that in their entire school careers there's never been a "snow day" in which West Valley schools were cancelled.Meanwhile, their Western Washington cousins get to stay home whenever there's a skiff of snow.
Of course, the weather really isn't the problem. Folks in this neck of the woods are just made of hardier stock.

Just as a bare-minimum allowance for people without a place to stay – those of us with homes magnanimously allowing them a spot to pitch a tent in the freezing cold?’What’s wrong with Playfair or a corner of the fairgrounds?
Follow-up: Yeah, we know there could be problems. And we don't want it in our front yard. And there is no way in a thousand years that this would ever happen here. But what if Spokane got all San Francisco and created an official camp site somewhere? Is there anywhere such a thing would be practical? Would it be a good idea if there were?

The Sitka behind the back pass from the low post on the give and go is classic.

It actually makes things more interesting to look at, in my opinion. Breaks the monotony of beauty, don't you think?
Seriously though, why complain about it? What good will it do? It's gonna happen anyway, what with cars spewing out exhaust that blackens the snow. Think about what it might look like in the future, when the world has run out of oil and vehicles burn clean fuel. We might opine for the past.
"Don't you just hate looking at a really slushy scene? Don't you long for the black road ridges of the past? I hate white slushiness, don't you?"
Still...what's the point in complaining? It's weather. It's snow. It's precipitation. Get over it. It happens. Now just go out and deal with it head on.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________The key is NOT driving in Utah (-:
I will never forget my first quarter as a freshman at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. NOW...keep in mind....I am a Mormon(LDS). Therefore, I can say this with utter and total objectivity....
Utah drivers are the worst on the Planet...and the most rude and arrogant drivers...anywhere....including Europe. Later on, after serving a Mormon mission in Spain, I returned to BYU to study Russian/Chess/Communications.....SHEEEEESH. My fellow Mormons are sooooo impatient. Last night I saw Spokanes best leader....who is a Mormon.
--- Ozzie Knezovich, our sheriff. (LDS/Mormon)---
We were watching Steve Corker being sworn in at the city council chambers. He is so cool. Ron Wells was there as well. In another life I would love to be Ron Wells. His architecture is so darn visionary and beautiful. Talk about talent. That "Steamplant" is a true work of artistry.
Key to safe driving ? Les Schwab tires and patience !

Don't you think you're being a little hard on Alex, Shawn? After all, college athletes -- especially in a marquee conference like the Pac 10 -- are slobbered over in the recruiting process, then they spend the next five years being treated like campus royalty. At the end of all that some of them go on to become celebrities and millionaires. And I'm sure it's not lost on them how much the college's fortunes rise and fall on their performances.
It doesn't strike me as too outrageous that Brink might expect some enthusiasm for the program from Floyd.

Such is the case in this particularly disturbing account in Illinois. Who pays for a suicide that was provoked by a fake person?Posted by Casey at Stupid Questions elicits some driving tips at 28 Nov 3:47 PM:
The solution is the same as it is every year;Winterize your vehicle
Clear your windows and lights completely before leaving
Leave early
Take time starting and stopping
Leave extra room between you and the next person
Pay attention (or put another way, get the heck off the cell-phone and drive!)
Always try to leave yourself an escape route
Be a polite driver, you never know, it might be contagious…or it might just save your life if you encounter a driver with road-rage

Toadman and Ken have effectively covered this topic, other than to say that the solution is also the same as it is every year;Winterize your vehicle
Clear your windows and lights completely before leaving

Take time starting and stopping
Leave extra room between you and the next person
Pay attention (or put another way, get the heck off the cell-phone and drive!)

‘The Legislature may make it possible for low-income families to put off paying a quarter of their property taxes until a home is sold. How does that sound to you?’Sounds like another entitlement to me.

If you are old enough to fight and die for your country, shouldn’t you be able to have a drink in it?
