Host off air for autism remarks

Talk show host Michael Savage has been pulled off seven stations in Mississippi after making some controversial comments about autism.

Savage says his remarks were aimed at "greedy doctors (who) include children in medical categories which may not be appropriate is a crime against that child and their family. Let the truly autistic be treated….let the falsely diagnosed be free."

The host has claimed his comments were taken out of context by people who would like him off the air.

At least one company has pulled its advertising from the show.

Savage is heard in Spokane on 790 kjrb.

His comments were definitely taken out of context. There is no reason for any station to take him off the air just because of his statements (unless the radio stations caved in to the anti-First Amendment facsists).

Seven stations down, 343 to go. All sponsors should pull their support for this trash talk radio program.

Savage is now trying to back peddle, saying he was taken out of context. Anyone can listen to what he said. It's hard to take him out of context. If he's saying that his remarks were aimed at "greedy doctors", then why call the kids brats?

He spent the whole show Monday explaining what he meant...and saying he was taken out of context.

He is the third highest rated talkshow host in the country. And it's very easy to take a shot at someone when they're so successful.

Was he taken out of context? Should sponsors pull their support from the show? Can you really call it "talk radio" anymore...when the host spends more time yelling and talking about himself...then he does talking about the issues?

Food for thought.

If you walked into your job, and started screaming about how autistic kids are all brats, and someone in management got upset, then there's a good chance you'll be fired. He's trash radio, but if he steps over the line, then management is allowed to fire him, seeing as they aren't denying his First Amendment right to free speech; the Constitution doesn't guarantee you an avenue to speech, just the ability.

Savage has the right to say what he wants. However, stations have the right to fire him, as they have done and will continue to do, and advertisers have the right not to pull their support, as they will do and will continue to do.

Maybe it's easy to take shots at someone who is successful. It's also easy, apparently, to take shots at children who can't defend themselves, and at their parents who struggle daily.

Of course he was taken out of context. It was a two minute sound bite. The problem for Savage is that it doesn't matter. "Let me tell you about autism, 99% of the cases are brats who need to be to told to cut it out" means the same thing in a 3 hour rant as it does in a 2 minute sound bite.
