Your major point, JL, was that gambling was not "biblical" and was condemned therein as a sin. You still haven't provided any evidence to support that.

Nice try rawk, but it was clearly an abuse of power as determined by a bipartisan committee dominated by conservative republicans. You can spin it any way you'd like but it doesn't change the simple fact that Governors don't get to go headhunting after ex family members just because of a messy divorce custody battle involving the Governor's sister.

Palin wasn't ready for primetime and McCain and/or his strategists took a huge, one might argue irresponsible, gamble and are now losing big with Sarah.

Remember, most adults with a mature and socially responsible set of moral beliefs and values don't hold to "the ends justifying the means" if it includes stepping outside of the rules.

You're having trouble and angst that so many McLame/Palin supporters are completely ignorant of the facts.

A REPUBLICAN majority of Alaskan legislators judged Palin had abused her authority, which is completely obvious on it's face. Except to the ignorant.

McCain was BOOED today when he tried to calm down the mouth breathers by saying Obama would make a fine president.

Alaskans are a tough independent breed, even their redumblicans. The rethugs are used to sending an army of lawyers into Florida or Ohio and strongarming the redumblican pols to roll over on their crap. Not in Alaska! They aren't gonna take that crap and they aren't gonna let suited thugs boss em around.

Plus, I think Sarah Palin, a moronic little tinpot dictatoress prolly pissed too many of them off with her bossy nasty demanding ways.

Posted by green libertarian at Alaska Panel: Palin Abused Authority at 10 Oct 10:02 PM:

McLame or more likely, his Rovian handlers, took a big gamble on Saracuda, knowing this scandal was pending investigation, and which, at the time, Palin said she welcomed the investigation. Then when she was made the VP pick, an army of RNC and McLame camp lawyers descended on Alaska, and tried to shut down the investigation, and they did manage to hamper it. The should be looked at for obstructing justice. Crooks, liars, and hypocrites.

FactCheck.org conclusion

Voters may differ in how they see Ayers, or how they see Obama's interactions with him. We're making no judgment calls on those matters. What we object to are the McCain-Palin campaign's attempts to sway voters - in ads and on the stump - with false and misleading statements about the relationship, which was never very close. Obama never "lied" about this, just as he never bragged about it. The foundation they both worked with was hardly "radical." And Ayers is more than a former "terrorist," he's also a well-known figure in the field of education.

The scariest thing is how she's inciting the rubes drooling at her pantyhosed calves and ankles to want to kill Barack Obama. Unlike McCain, this she-devil hater seems to enjoy the red meat crowd and not want to correct their craziness. Kudos to McCain for attempting to calm the crazies down by telling them that Barack would make a good president.

Posted by Sweet & Sour Herb at Huckleberries Best of the INorthwest -- 10/10/08 at 10 Oct 8:12 PM:

The first thing that occurs to me is that this is a very poorly written story. For instance, if this is accurate, then the perps were 10, 12, and 11 when they committed this crime.

While killing someone for their sexual proclivity is asinine and cruel, the ages of the perps are germaine and were left out of the details of the story.

Posted by sue at TGIF Wild Card -- 10/10/08 at 10 Oct 8:10 PM:

For Arpie: Finally, after a woman said that she was truly afraid Barack was a muslim, McCain said you don't have to be afraid. I respect Senator Obama, he is a family man, I disagree with his ideas. Don't be afraid, even if he's elected. After they've stirred the pot, and tried to make people afraid, and after he's been criticized, then he decides to try to calm the waters. Haven't seen too much maverickyness with him, I have to say. This was appropriate, but still seemed staged for the campaign.

Time for some innovation to revive a moribund tradition, maybe?

It was years ago that the Lewiston Morning Tribune started signing their editorials. They only had a couple writers, though. If you've got 6 and a Publisher, issue them the way the SCOTUS does and let us know if it was 4-3, or 5-2 (or 1*-6); let those who disagree post a dissenting opinion.

What's the downside, diluting the power of the newspaper's editorial voice? Let's just say that doesn't seem like a salient issue at this juncture in the business.

Posted by Wally at Alaska Panel: Palin Abused Authority at 10 Oct 7:13 PM:

That's how Repugnicans roll, isn't it? The spoils of power and all.

If she had been governor of Idaho and pulled this kind of stunt, do you think there'd be any outcry. Hell, no.

In its eight years in control of this country, the Bush regime has created a political environment that says anything goes, we make the rules and screw you if you don't like it. Please, somebody try to argue with me on that; you can't.

So it only makes sense that small-potatoes politicians like Palin, et al, are just following their lead. It's the doctrine of, do what you have to retain power, don't confess and don't apologize.

It's that shameful attitude of government that threatens the fabric of our society more than the current economic crisis. It has to change, and so far, McCain-Palin haven't gotten the memo.

hmmm ... those of us on the left are masters of rationalization so it will be interesting to see how the right rationalizes this, how will they are argue this is no big deal...

The moral of the story is that it take a significant personal constitution to resist the corrupting influences of power. I think the biggest dangers posed by untested candidates, like Obama or Palin, is that they haven't demonstrated an ability to resist that corruption (like McCain and Biden have). Palin obviously can't (or couldn't) at least in this instance.

The page-views are important b/c they bring in revenue -- $10 to $12 per 1000 page-views for each display ad. in other words, the SR earns $100 to $120 per display ad per day when hbo gets 10,000 page-views. Unique views give an indication of the general viewership of HBO. I'd guess that's in the 7000 to 8500 range.

But yeah the congresscritters are all busy campaigning in their home districts. The senators are probably helping some buddies if they aren't running this year. And I've seen plenty of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. And if you haven't noticed, Dems are hardly the voting monolith Republicans demand of their members. We sometimes lament that, particularly when they show Lieberman like qualities. Then we shoo them where they belong.

Anyway, there was an interesting article on Slate about where will all the Republicans go if (when) Obama wins? The Democrats always have Canada, Europe, or the majority of rest of the civilized world to flee too; but where will Conservatives go? For those conservatives on the blog, where will you be packing up and heading off to on Nov 5?

Where’s Waldo?

Where’s Nancy Pelosi? Where’s Harry Reid, Where’s Jack Murtha? Where’s John Kerry? Where’s Carl Levin, Where’s John Dean? Where’s any nationally known senior democrat for that matter? We saw a few of them peep out for a brief viewing during the bailout debate and then poof! They went dark again.

Why are they being hidden from public view during this election? Why aren’t these shining stars of the party out front and visible during this campaign? In past campaigns, the senior team is always heavily involved and out front.

Embarrassment perhaps? Coincidence, or strategy by design?

We know why senior Republicans are lurking in the shadows, but what about the democrats? Isn’t their astute leadership team part of the deal to be taken home to the promised land?

Just wondering…..

It happens over and over again everytime you start a new job, are introduced to new people, and many other times when "the subject" comes up and needs to be addressed yet again for whatever reson throughout your entire life. That said, I've noticed only the slightest degree of increased acceptance here in the local area, whereas in larger cities I've resided, it was never really a big deal to begin with. I was watching McCain for awhile this morning until he got disgusting to the point that I had to change the channel. What he had to say about Obama's associations and past campaign contributions; where he declared that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the Dems desire to protect both companies from further regs that led to the current economic chaos; this led me to e-mailing Larry King Live with a question about McCain's past associations as well as how he helped the business interests from whom he got campaign contributions.

Blogging, I also mentioned that Countrywide, the company that first informed homeowners that they could turn their homes into credit cards, was actually the first business to suffer a financial meltdown. And that McCain had said nothing about Countrywide. He certainly wasn't prepared to say anything about the fact that the current mortgage crisis that has led to the current home foreclosure crisis was in large part created by companies such as Countrywide that encouraged bad mortgages in the first place. And who enabled Countrywide to tout home as credit card to people encouraged to spend, spend, spend by the GW administration? That may be why McCain never mentions it.

A gas war to be specific.

The opening volley may be happening at Albertsons gas station. I stopped in to fill up this morning because the $2.99 didn't look too bad. But they had flyers taped on the pumps that they would be taking an extra 10 cents a gallon off at the pumps (none of this having to go inside with cash stuff that defeats the whole purpose of self-service convenience at the pump).

So it is $2.88!

Just like a Jerry Lewis telethon, I therefore challenge all local stations to meet that 10 cent discount and double it!

Change back from my 3 dollar bill?

Way to go Connecticut.

From the ruling:

It is instructive to recall in this regard that the traditional, well-established legal rules and practices of our not-so-distant past (1) barred interracial marriage, (2) upheld the routine exclusion of women from many occupations and official duties, and (3) considered the relegation of racial minorities to separate and assertedly equivalent public facilities and institutions as constitutionally equal treatment.

Like these once prevalent views, our conventional understanding of marriage must yield to a more contemporary appreciation of the rights entitled to constitutional protection. Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice. To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others. The guarantee of equal protection under the law, and our obligation to uphold that command, forbids us from doing so. In accordance with these state constitutional requirements, same sex couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry.

Rustler's Roost (the one that existed in the late 80's on Sherman) was my absolute utopia of a bohemian paradise... keep in mind, this was before Java, before the other end of Sherman became hip. And we were probably not Mr. McEvers's favorite customers: basically we'd come in for hours at a time, drink endless cups of coffee, and perhaps the more flush among us would order a biscuits and gravy or two... but oh, the conversation.
I hung with the bookish stoner crowd which chafed at all things establishment and thirsted for something, anything, as long as it was big city or even better, Eurotrash.
I remember sitting, entranced, one day, all my friends leaving one by one, as I first read Kerouac's On the Road. Looking up, guiltily, as the waitress finally asked me to move up to the bar. I looked around and realized I was alone in a large booth littered with detritus from probably a dozen like-minded teens who'd come and gone. I breezed out of there, head filled with visions of beat poets and cross-country travel, feet barely touching the floor.

Rarely were tips left, and I think as a better-mannered, well-traveled adult, at subsequent visits to the location closing now, I've subconsciously tried to atone for my past misdeeds. Tipping lavishly for good, yet never exceptional, service (the food I would describe likewise); pre-bussing our table while my husband raised an eyebrow and I shrugged self-consciously, unable to put into words my feelings.
Mr. McEvers, please don't ever close your dooors. It would mean the end of another era.

Sue - you should take a look at the thread that has the link written by Dick Morris. His column addresses why the vague character questions are missing the mark. It provides insight into what those crazy Republicans are thinking.

Darth. Just for the record, the My Lai Massacare was "the mass murder of 347 to 504 unarmed citizens" many of them women and children. Just because Lt. Calley was convicted of only "killing twenty two", doesn't make the actual number of murdered civilians a lie. Should I claim that just because you misrepresent the facts that it "is a great example of how far the left right will go to justify their cause?" Get a clue.

Failing accomplishing his 12 monumental tasks, Hercules the 8 foot boa wants to go about making life better for those he encounters. Yes he is named Hercules and no, don't ask us how we know. But as any star-crossed illegitimate son of a mythological god would know, not everything goes as planned. Our snake friend has gone from being homeless, to being a foster snake to being part of a potential grand theft charge.

Duh. Of course. :-)

In sixth grade we had a very young teacher, just out of school. I tucked three garter snakes in her top desk drawer. Oh, my...
I expected her to jump a little. Not through the roof screaming, crying and carrying on. After all, they were "just harmless garter snakes"
She wasn't amused.
She made me remove the snakes. I put them in my locker. What else are you gonna do? ...
They escaped through the little holes in the back of the locker.
Never did tell her the snakes now slithered through the walls of the building.

GL - that video made me tear some of what's left of my hair out. I think there should be a required intelligence test given to people before they are allowed to vote for pres of the US and if they are too stupid as we witnessed in the video then they are out - no voting. It scares the hell out of me that these are the kinds of people who help pick our President - this must of been what happened with "W".

Just for the record Lt. Calley was convicted of killing twenty two. The 500 number is a great example of how far the left will go to justify their cause. Don't condone any deaths but the point is a lie, is a lie, is a lie and Seymore Hersch was a known lefty. I doubt the old vet if he was an old vet would call anyone who had the misfortune of serving in Johnsons war a goon. Unless uou been there you have no right to judge and again anyone can sign in with a fake name.

Look is it just me, or does that BizfinderNW.com ad with the bride and groom make the groom look like some predatory and evil vampire about to take a two putt on the ole Jugular Links golf course? It's creeping the crap out of me. Bring back Harelip Baby.

Is life imitating art?

Does anyone else remember the television series a few years back where Geena Davis plays the first female president of the United States? It was pretty forgettable, So bad I don’t even remember the name, but the basic premise is worth revisiting. The show opens with Davis as Vice President sitting at the bedside of a stroke stricken president. He is asking her to resign. The speaker of the house, a masterfully snaky Donald Sutherland, is of the same party, and ready to take control. It turns out Davis was placed as VP to garner votes and not because of anything anyone in power thought she could do as President. After consulting with her husband she decides to be a maverick and stick it out becoming the president when her predecessor dies. She goes on to become a president over-handled by her advisors before low ratings end her term prematurely, a fate that unmercifully hasn’t yet happened in real life.

Could it be possible that life could imitate art so completely as we contemplate the possibility of a Palin Presidency? It’s easy to see Gingrich declaring himself the rightful heir to the presidency and Rove pulling all his skills to bump Palin aside. The mess sure could continue.
