Bobbin' along in my car

A group of Cubans was intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard Tuesday when they tried to reach Florida in a 1959 Buick modified into a boat. It's still uncertain what will happen to them, but it got me wondering about car boats.

Turns out there was a car boat produced back in 1963 in Germany, called the Amphicar. There aren't many left, but it sure would make tooling around Couer d'Alene a lot of fun.

Crash test baby seats

Have a minor fender-bender lately? That baby car seat may still be OK.

In a recent release, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is revising its recommendation that parents always replace car seats after a crash.

As long as the vehicle could be driven away from the crash, there were no injuries to anyone inside, the airbags didn't deploy and the vehicle door nearest the car seat wasn't damaged, the car seat can still be safely used.

As for that old car seat, there are other uses.

Inside auto pollution

Many people now use their car's cigarette lighter to charge their cell phone and the ash tray to store change, but Georgia drivers who use them to light and dispose of cigarettes better hope for good weather.

The Georgia State Legislature is considering a bill to ban smoking in cars with child passengers unless the windows are open. The law would only apply if the children were four years old or younger.

Those who puff with the windows up would be fined $15.
