One question today at the 4:30 design meeting: Should Eddy Arnold's death be a story on the front page? here's the story from Reuters.com.

Talk loudly into the microphones, senior innovation editor Carla Savalli said, because editor Steve Smith was tuning in via webcast. In other news: ( Full post )

Today we conference-dialed in editor Steve Smith who is in a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden, where they do indeed have telephones. He asked if everyone could hear him over the jazz trio. Some of his Swedish friends were interested in listening in on the meeting over their hors d'oeurves and cocktails. It is currently late evening over there, where Smith is visiting with a series of communications professionals.

At the morning meeting, one editor noticed the business section AP photo shows a man talking on a cell phone while bicycling, while his little passenger is not wearing a helmet.

Spokane to host 2010 skate event: Perhaps the S-R editors aren't as excited as the rest of town, but folks are definitely curious about the upcoming second round - specifically, whether it'll be more expensive to get in. For some of last year's coverage, here's the special section and the multimedia feed. City editor Addy Hatch hinted that if you're too good at pre-skate coverage, you may be assigned to cover it in 2010.
Past and current coverage on Todd Chism

• Chism supporters push for lawsuit: Editors agreed that this story about Spokane firefighter Todd Chism was rightly placed on page A1. Chism was previously suspected of buying child pornography but it turns out someone had used his identity, according to Washington State Patrol. Recent coverage of Todd Chism's situation appeared on page B1, published March 7, and on page B1 published April 3. With people living longer, should Bloomsday split their "90 and over" category? Photo director Larry Reisnouer, among others, thinks it may be a good idea - While there are exceptions, there must be a noticeable difference between being in early 90s versus late 90s.
Naming businesses for complaints, and other newsroom news

There's a discussion going on at News is a Conversation about whether or not The Spokesman-Review should have identified the businesses named for unresolved complaints in 2007. The original story, which does not name those businesses, ran on February 3 as a Year in Review feature.
Handling news stories about bomb threats

After much discussion, editors agreed that yesterday's bomb threat at Eastern Washington University made two things clear: Online and radio coverage are timely deliveries to report breaking news as it happens, but for something that is only relevant news while it is still happening, editors decided not to give it in-newspaper coverage the next morning.
