Two 11-year-old girls arrested

Two 11-year-old girls were arrested Saturday night for allegedly smashing several windows at Adams Elementary School and trashing the principal's office, Spokane Police said.

Several youngsters had contacted a neighbor and said they saw two girls inside the school building about 7 p.m. The neighbor saw the two girls climb out a broken window and detained them until officers arrived at the school on 36th and
Regal.

The girls first claimed they saw a broken window and climbed inside. Then they admitted they had broken five windows and damaged the office.

Police estimated the damage at more than $1,500. Both girls were booked into Juvenile Detention for second degree burglary and first degree malicious mischief, a felony. Masked men rob Valley tavern

Two men in black masks and military green jumpsuits robbed a Valley tavern Monday morning, herding the bartender and two customers into a restroom, then pillaging the business for several minutes.

The pair, one of who brandished a stainless steel-colored pistol, entered The Bayou Bar and Grill, 4511 N. Barker Road, through a back door about 9:20 a.m. Monday, Spokane Valley Police said. The two suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash from the till, the safe, the pull tab machines and the bartender's purse before leaving, police said.

Before moving their victims to the bathroom, the suspects made sure none had a cell phone with which they could alert police. No one was injured.

The victims told officers that both suspects wore nearly identical jumpsuits, masks, black gloves and black boots. The armed suspect was a white male about 5 foot 11 and 160 pounds. The second suspect was also a male, but shorter.

A man with a “Crocodile Dundee” knife decided that flight was better than fight when his opponent pulled a .357-caliber pistol Monday, Spokane Valley Police said.

The quarrel began, police said, at a small apartment complex at 10625 E. Trent. A Spokane woman and a California man are co-owners of the complex, police said, and the woman had hired her brother-in-law to do electrical work at the building.

The California man came to the site Monday and found that the work failed to meet state building codes, police said. He complained to his female partner, who summoned the brother-in-law, Bradley E. Cooper, 19107 E. Riverside.

As Cooper, 33, and the California man argued over the quality of the work, Cooper pulled what officers described as a “Crocodile Dundee” knife, which was 1 1/2 feet long. He struck the California man in the head with the knife, police said. Uncowed by the Spokane man's bold but somewhat primitive technique, the California man retrieved the .357 from his car, police said. Cooper then opted to leave, police said.

A description of his vehicle was broadcast and Cooper was stopped a short time later at Trent and Pines by Washington State Patrol Trooper Dan Derrick.

Police booked Cooper into jail on a felony charge of second-degree assault. The California man didn't require medical treatment.Firefighter injured removing roofing

A Spokane firefighter was injured Monday while trying to remove metal roofing from a burning home, the Spokane Fire Department said.

The firefighter, whose name wasn't released, cut his right hand as he pulled off pieces of the home's metal roof so crews could reach the fire burning the wooden shakes beneath. He was taken to Deaconess Medical Center.

The extent of the damage to the 1 1/2 story home at 2610 N. Altamont was unknown and the cause of the 12:40 a.m. fire was under investigation, the department said.

A smoke alarm woke the family of five, none of who was injured. When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the back of the house. The flames got into the attic through the eaves. It took crews about two hours to remove the metal roofing to get at the shakes.

A car parked near the back of the house was destroyed. Man tries to return stolen shoes

A Colbert man was arrested Sunday for allegedly trying to return a stolen pair of lady's shoes to Nordstrom.

Jesse Dion Luke, 25, was booked into jail on charges of second-degree possession of stolen property, a felony. He was also booked on an outstanding felony warrant for an unrelated incident.

Luke had no receipt when he tried to return the shoes and Nordstrom employees found that the shoes had been purchased in Seattle, by a woman.

The employees located the purchaser, who said her car had been prowled earlier in the day and the shoes were missing.

Luke initially gave police a false name, false birth date and said he couldn't remember his address, police said.Reward offered for woman's return

Corvallis, Ore. As the search for a missing Brigham Young University student moved into its seventh day, a $30,000 reward was offered for any information leading to the 19-year-old's safe return.

Brooke Wilberger, whose parents live in Veneta, was last seen a week ago, at the apartment complex her sister manages in Corvallis.

Lt. Ron Noble, a spokesman for the Corvallis police department, said police have focused on four “persons of interest,” one of whom was arrested over the weekend on unrelated burglary charges.

The search for Wilberger is now focusing on natural areas near Corvallis. More than 1,200 volunteers have searched more than 2,000 acres in Benton County in the past week, looking for the missing woman.
